Then Thomas of Hali- fax came right back and recovered the lead for Halifax by scoring twice, givng them a. 3-2 margin at the end of the first period.

Perth put on pressure to recov- er its .051. ground but Halifax re- fused to lie back and both teams notched two. the easterners carry- ing through with their fight all the way. ‘The third period. saw foor more goals, all within five minutes, but Halifax got only one, the last goal 0i the game.

After His Worship Mayor Foster had officially opened pro- ceedings in a speech in which he heartily welcomed the contestants to the City and wished the event the best of success, the Maritime and Provincial Speed Skating Championships got away to a glori- ous start at the Forum last night when 34 of the 68 events listed on the two-day meet saw champions declared in what easily was the most sensational display of speed ever witnessed in an Island rink. Sensational finishes, fast times and loads of courage were all on display as (he competitors, representing the three provinces gave their best attempting to earn a Maritime or provincial title. In‘ several cases, particularly in the girls races, competitors had to be helped from the ice as they skated themselvs into ll stateiof ex- haustion in every event.
