Island M.P. Enters Hospital At Ottawa

OTTAWA. Feb. 4-(Special) - xoii A. Mathescn Liberal member ior Queen's is a patient at Ottawa civic l-fospital suffering from a throat ailment.

When the throat trouble would not yield to ordinary treatment, Mr. Matheson decided earlier this iieek to enter hospital and have the ailment cleared up. Last 1118115 he was reported as lmprovins by T- J. Kiokham, Liberal member for King's, and Mr. Me.theson's office- mate in the Parliament Buildings.

Woman's Purse Snatched By Boys

Wednesday evening as 11 woman iias about to turn into the In- ilrms.ry on Kenslngton Road she felt her purse being torn from her hand. She thought it was a friend at the Infirmary until she turned and saw two youngsters running towards the railroad tracks. The City Police were cal- led and on arrival were success- ful in tracing the boys as far as the railway yards, but lost track of them there. They are still in- wstigating.

Last week another woman lost her purse in the same manner, and it is believed to the same hnys, on lower Grafton Street. The puree snatched Wednesday rontalned about 310 in cash, some stamps, and some papers and keys of no value to anyone but the owner. The purse is dark brown with a zipper.

ATTACKED BY DOG - Hazell Lowe. eight-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Havelock H. Lowe of 237 Grafton Street was attack- ed and bitten on the face by an unknown large brown and white dog yesterday afternoon at 3:30.. The child was taken to tho Poly-W clinic where several slitcllcs were required to close the wound. The attack is reported to have taken place on Kent Street. near the Maple Leaf Taxi stand.

ALPHA Y'S MEN'S MEETING-' The Alrplia Y's Men's Club held their monthly business meeting last evening in the Y.M.C.A. with president Dick Mathcson presiding. Following the reports of the var- ious committees, plans were dis- cussed for the producing of the club's annual show to take place in April. The show this year is to be a musical comedy called "Rose of the Danube" and will be under the direction of O. K. Presby. col. ill. Johnston of Long River, P. E. 1,. and Stuart Carver of Halifax were present as guests and introduced to the club. A hearty sing-song was led by Harvey lMe.cl-"hereon with O. K. Predby at the piano.

SORORITY MEETING - The weekly meeting of the Beta Phait Sorority of the Y.M.C.A. was held on Thursday evening in Room C. Jean MacFs.rlane, President, pre- sided over the meeting. Those who attended the skating party at the Memorial Field last evening l'f'.- ported an enjoyable time and it was decided to go again next week. It was decided to make an ap- proach to some summer-side girls in the interest of beginning -i Phiat Club there. At the close of the business meeting an induction ceremony of the new l11GIII1'bEf'S, which were nine in number, was pei-fol-rned. The induction officers were: Mrs. John stems. adviser; Jean Macldarlane, President; Cat- hryn MacLeod, V.P. Before the business meeting an hour of either bridge or bowling was en- joyed by the members.

Ayrshire Club Executive Meets

Mr. Lloyd MacLeod of Bridge- town presided et a meeting of the Prince Edward Island Ayrshire Breeders' Club held yesterday af- ternoon at the Experimental Farm.

The directors agreed in principle to have the Club provide a sub- sldy for new breeders buying purebred Ayrshire females. This plan will probably include breed- ers with less than three pure- bred females and also 4 H Calf Club members buying purebred calves. The detail of this plan will be worked out within the next week or so.

The matter of holding a spring sale came in for considerable dis- cussion and A committee of Lloyd MacLeod, Bridgetown, Heber Mac- Phall, New Haven and Edward Boswell, Victoria. was appointed to work on this subject. The big- gest problem will be in finding enough animals to make the sale possible. All breeders reported that there was ll good demand for purebred Ayrshire females and many received requests for breed-

stock which they could not . Representative of the Depart-

ment ,of Agriculture present at the meeting, reminded the breed- ers that calf club members will soon be looking for calves. All breeders with calves available were asked to notify the Secre- tary Jim Nicholson at the Ex- perimental Farm.

Lt. Col. 1. Andrew. one of the Mariti o Directors of the Canadian Ayrshire Breeders' A!- soclation, will luvs tomorrow for Toronto where he will attend the annual meeting of that Association. On behalf of the local club, he will present the recommendation that all Ayrshire Calf Club mem- bers he granted the full privileges of the C.A.B.A.. free of charge. This would include a subscription ii! The Canadian Ayrshire Review and reduced. fees for registration of calves.

It is proposed to hold the 1064 Field Day at strathgartrley. if suitable arrangements can be made with Mr. W. F. A. Stewart. Mr. Stewart, who was not present at

the meeting. had previously ex- tended an invitation to the Club.

Island Odds And Ends

Ground has already been broken for the building of the new fish Dlant at souris. A bulldozer has commenced levelling the site near the Bouris lighthouse. where the main building of the new company will be constructed. It is poaible that three separate buildings will be erected. the larger one inwhich 5-9h Processing will be carried on, to be well over a hundred feet long. Another sizable unit is talk- ed about to contain a freezer, and the third unit of the large plant. it. is said, will house a plant to manufacture fish meal.

The company will be known as The Griffin Fisheries, and cm. SCll'UCCi0Il work on the main build- lnz pWll.l be pushed as rapidly as possible. If at all practical, wea- ther permitting, worhmen expect to be pouring concrete for the foundation well before the end of this present month. Mr. Henry McLauglhlin, well-known as a builder in Ea.ste'rrl King's County, will be in charge of the construc- tion work.

A start is also being made on Souris' new potato chips plant, and it will be completed at a fairly early date. The construction of the new fish plant and the potato chip building will, it is believed, engage all of the carpenters in souris and vicinity, and a consid- erable nulnber of laborers. It is P391118 predicted that a shortage of workers may develcpvwhen lobster and other fishing activities open up in the spring.

It is quite an honor for Murray River to be the first place in this Province to have a showing of three dimensional movies. In fact. with its strikingly modern new Mayfair Theatre, Murray River has moved into the forefront of entertainment in the Maritlmes,as far as the small towns and cities are concerned. If any more smart- ly and tastefully designed theatre has been built in some of the smaller Maritime cities it is dif- ficult to recall them.

Meeting Al" Clifton Seeks Electric Power

A strong resolution submitting to the Premier and Government their claim upon early considera- tion in the matter of electrifica- tion was passed at s largely at- tended meeting of the residents of the area. under review, iield at Clifton Hall last evening. The resolution was as follows:

Whereas the Premier has an- nounced that rural electrification will be proceeded with during the coming year, and whereas the districts have not had access to power and light andrare among the best and most productive as- ricultural areas of the province. and whereas the geographical area bounded by Cavendish, New Glas- gow, summerfleld and sea view lends itself to a. development whereby fifty miles of line could electrify the whole area, now be it therefore resolved, that we the residents of New London. Stanley Bridge. Clinton. Graham's Road, French River. Long River, Honi- River. and Mountain Road do heartily approve of the proposed promoting of rural electrification and urge upon the Government and the Public Utility Board, the importance of making a start intsl the North Side of the First Dbl- trict of Queen's.

The resolution was moved by Arthur Johnstone, Lou River and seconded by Harry Underhsy and pllslmi unanimously.

Annual Meeting Of Local Canadian Legion Branch

Barn Burned Yesterday Al Mi. Herbert

A heavy blaze destroyed a barn containing milking equipment, hay and grain at Mount Herbert early Thursday morning. It was owned by Mrs. Isabella Driscoll. a widow.

Mrs. Driscoll awake-nod at 5.50 mm. to see the barn ablaze. With her two sons, Robert and Law- rence. she quickly got to the barn to turn out their 26 head of cat- tle and two horses before the barn was completely Demolished at 0.30.

It is thought the fire was caused by loose electrical 'wii'ing in one corner of the barn where the blaze was first noticed by Mrs. Driscoll. The barn had been built only about two years ago.

Health Pictures Shown In Schools

health were shown at the four city schooks and Notre Dame Academy on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.

In this film comparison was made between David. who went to bed early and Gcorgo, who did not get sufficient sleep.

It was shown how their sicepillg iiabiis affected their whole day, David being alert and active, both at school and at play and George being tired, listless and irritable throughout the day.

Both films were enthusiastically received by the teachers and pupils and it is hoped that the informa- tion obtained will prove of value.

Junior League -of Oh'town Hospital

The monthly meeting of the Junior League of the Charlotte- town Hospital was held on Tues- day with 42 molilbel-s present.

The president, Mrs. Urban Mc- Quaid opened the meeting with prayer.

Mrs. Kip Hughes, treasurer. re- ported a bank balance of 3496.20 I1-Dd s6.20 in petty cash.

Mrs. Bernard Hughes reported a successful cake sale held in Janu- ary which netted 5100.65.

A letter was read from the Sup- erior of the Hospital thanking the League for the purchase of a bot- tle washer for the nursery.

A letter was read requesting the purchase of a silent floor polisher and it was agreed to supply it.

After some iscussiorl it was de- cided to hold a prc-Lenten dance, to be arranged for by a. committee of six under the cliairmaniship of Miss Blanche Conway.

Irving DiTCo.u Awarded Damages

SAINT JOHN. N. 5., (OP)-An arbitration board has awarded the Irving Oil Co. Ltd. 350,045 as full payment arising from ekpropria- tioli of several of the company's service station properties by the City of Fredericton.

The properties were taken over by the city in 1948 to allow for construction of the Lord Beaver- brook Hotel. Arbitration became necessary when the city and the company failed to reach agreement on compensation for loss of prop- erty and business.

Total damages assessed by the board amounted to 550,045. but it payment of 311,386.78 made on account by the city in 1948 was deducted to leave a balance of 838,858.21 which the city must stul pay to the company.

Comrade Stan Bryant was elect- ed President, Charlottetown Branch Canadian Legion B. E. S. L. at their annual meeting held in the Clover Club at Legion Head- quarters last night.

The President, Mr.1 Leo Doyle, briefly reviewed the activities of the Branch during the year. He referred to the Coronation Cele- bration fn which the Branch mem- bers took an active part, and to the various Legion parades, sires-, sing particularly the Remembr- ance Day observance which wit-l nesscd the largest turn-out of veterans in many years.

Tile President paid tribute to the chairmen of the various coni- mitltees, complimenting them on the work accomplished and their loyalty to the Branch. Dances fori members were held at various times and the annual Christrlias Party for the children was once again a great. success. ,

He exlpressed the thanks of the Branch to the United Services Of- ficers Club and the Kingston Branch for their kind donations towards the Cigarette Fund for hospitalized veterans.

Regret was expressed and con- dolences extended to the families and relatives of veterans who passed away during the year.

During the summer season the Branch fielded a softball tram which heralded the reium of the Branch to local athletic activltiu. ,In closing the President thanked the members of the Executive for their co-operation and spoke at)- precizltiveiy of the ent-husias,i.ic supnort of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Branch.

A resolution of condolence was missed on the death of Betty Cur- ley. who although only a young girl had made an outstanding contribution to the work of tilt- Legion through the sales of pop- pies for several years.

In the January issue of the Canadian Ayrshire Review, the following Island cows are shown to be leaders in their respective classes: ”Fairvue Melody" in tile junior two-year-old class, owned by Mr. A. MacRae & Son, Char- lottetown Royalty, led with a pro- duction of 11,023 lbs. milk, 493 lbs. flit, 4.4792. This young cow was sired by "Kcndoral Bright Boy" which was bred by W. W. Antler- son and Sons, St. Peter's Bay. "Melody", as well as being a pro- ducer, is a show cow, having won first place in a strong class at the Maritime Winter Fair last fall.
