Sir,—The Canada Gavtte is not a very in | teresting looking periodical ; but an excursion linto its official columns occasionally atfords ,; Some interesting reading. A late number con- tains the statement of the imports into the Dominion for the month ending 30th June last, with the duties paid on the various articles. A few facts are of more value than many theories ; and such at.statement as this in the Gazette gives not a few facts about the present tariff. P. S.—Since writing the above, I have seen the figures of the total for the month of July. They are as follows: Value of dutiable govds, $4.055,202 ; duties paid, $1,096, 061.89-—being rather more than 27 per cent.

I understund that Mr. Kinglake, in his **Histery of the Crimea,” volumn I., says there was no such person- age, and asserts that on the occasion of the late Napoleon being declared Eniperor in 1850, the people mistook the three peints of exclamation (!!!)after the words ‘Vire U Empereur,’ a3 meaning third (LI) and thus propagated and continued the error. Washington Letter. WasHINGToN, D. C., Sept. 8.
Secretary Sherman is greatly pleased that notacent was lost in the recent sale, through several hundred agents, of the $40,000,000 in refunding certificates.
Denial is made by the President of a recent rumor to the effect that he had de- cided to remove from the public service all democrats and others not in sympathy with the republican party.
Lately the Attorney General decided that payments under the Arrears of Pension Act, in cases of inmates of government volunteer homes, should be made to the ex-soldiers and not to the homes. Suit has just been commenced by inmatese of the Home fear regular soldiers, in this city, to determine their right, instead of the Home’s, to the ,easion money paid each quarter.
There is no doubt now that general con- tributions for the relief of fever-stricken cities will have to be taken up in the North as they were last year. The expenses at Memphis alone are over one thousand dol- lars a day, and are increasing. It is not out of place to suggest that a more systematic and responsible method of collection and disbursement than was had last year is de- sirable.
Washington with its well paved and clean streets never presented a more attractive appearance than at this time, the public grounds having all the freshness of early spring, and never before have the plants and flowers in the grounds surrounding the Agricultural Dept., and in the numerous parks and lanes throughout the city pre- sented such a brilliant floral scene as now, the recent copious rains imparting to them a brillianecy amd freshness rarely, if ever, before seen in this or any other city.
The work on the National Museum build- ing on the Smithsonian grounds is progres- sing finely, and when finished will present an attractive architectural appearance. It covers a larger area of ground than any other building in the country except the Capitol, and it is said will be the most ex- tense and complete in allits arrangements of any building in the world for the purpose for which it is designed.

The London Echo says that Havrockses, Miller & Co., the largest cotton manufac- turers in the North of England have given notice of 50 per cent. reduction in wages. This probably heralds a general reduction.
The cotton operatives of Ashton and that neighborhood held the largest meeting ever kriown in that district on Wednesday, and unanimously decided to commence a strike on Thursday. The strike will be general by Friday. The operatives will not have to resort to the funds of trades unions for a fortnight.
Nathan Appleton has resigned the presi- dency of the United States Board of Trade.
It is reported that the National Bank of Peru has failed.
Thomas Clifford has been arrested in Brooklyn for throwing his wife out of a three story windew. She is dying.
Nearly five million dollars in gold arrived at New York on Wednesday on four En- ropean steamers, the largest amount ever imported in one day.
At Middleboro, England, a large iron manufacturing locality, an order has been received from the United States for 60,000 tons of nig iron.
The London Standard’s Vienna corres- pondent positively announces that Persia will co-operate with Russia in the Merv ex- pedition, and will contribute 1,000 infantry and 3,000 cavalry. ' ;
AFGHANISTAN.
Lonpon, Sept. 10.
A Lahore despatch says Kurnm and Candahar are quiet, but the northern dis- tricts are turbulent. Badakshan threatens to revolt and the Ameer’s position is believ- ed to be perilous. The Cabul roads are closed. An Allahabad despatch announces that the Infantry and some guns have al- ready advanced through Shutargarden Pass aud it is expected the cavalry will advance on Khoshi in a week.

The (Gazette says the massacre of the members of the English mission to Afghan- istan obliterates the scientific frontier be- tween that country and India, and necessi- tates the occupation of the whole of Afghan- istan by the british; but this is ineompat- ible with the assurance given by England to Russia, with whom there must be an un- derstanding in regard to the measures of satisfaction to be taken by England. The Gazette recommends a solution by the par- tition of Afghanistan so as to bring the Eng- lish and Russians dominions iv contact.

Two regimentsat Chatham and 8 batieries of Artillery are ordered in readiness to pro- ceed to India. Several battalions will if necessary be orlered from the Cape uf Good Hope to India.
The Secretary of the Indian government has issued a notice that ne correspondents will be allowed to accompany the troops into Afghanistan, but that regimental ollicers 1my communicate with the news- papers.
Major Connelly, the British political agent, telegraphed officially from Ali-Khey) that intelligence is received there that the Ameer is terribly perplexed at the reproach to his name, that he is in privacy witha few faithful Sirdors, and that he is sure to come personally and apologize to the Gov- ernment.
Lord Napier is ill at Kissingen.
The press association announces that no doubt exists in the India office that the out break has assumed larger proportions than at first supposed.
The Daily News’ Lahore despatch says Gen. Massey is pushing on to Cabul regard- less of the difficulties of procuring trans- portation. Gen. Roberts is also believed to be making a dash for Cabul.

A curious Breach ot Promise Case.
Of all the accusations brought against the City of Glasgow Bank, that of being the cause of an action for breach of promise of marriage is certainly the strangest, but nevertheless it isa fact. The names of the parties are well known, but there is no necessity for mention- them ; suffice it to say that the indy belongs to Glasgow, the gentleman to Greenock, both of them being people of some wealth. The lady unfortunately held some of the stock of the bank, and when the crash came, although the marriage invitations had actually been issued, the gentleman cried off until it was ascertain- ed how far he would be affected as her hus- band. After the decision of the House of Lords that no liability would extend to him, it was, of course, expected that he would at once complete his engagement, but for some reason or other he had changed his mind, and positively refused to do so. After all per. suasion had failed an action claiming £3,000 was raised, which he has now compromised by paying £1,000,
