Who Was That Masked Man?

Every year, UPEI elects a group of students who then proceed to put odd letters after their names and live in tiny offices in the Barn. This select group are often heard begging for volunteers and pleading with their profs to excuse one more absence. So who the heck are they? The student council, of course.

Our elected reps include the presi- dent, vice-president internal, vice-president external, vice-president operations, and vice-president of finance. These folks are elected yearly by a campus-wide election. They do everything from represent student views for the administration to keep students entertained with kickin’ pubs. Knowing who your representatives are is the key to making your views known. If you have something to say, or you would like to volunteer your efforts on a committee or event, these are the people to talk to.

This year, our president is Amber Liv Allin. Some of you will recognize her from the handbook. The prez is the official spokesperson of the SU, and she schedules SU meetings, is a member of Senate, and gets stuck doing every other job no one else wants. Seriously, the president does have responsibilities. In addition to keeping office hours, she must keep tabs on lobby efforts of CFS/CASA, and keep the local

media informed on what we radical UPEI students are doing now. Amber has busy days in committee meetings, writing letters and meeting with students. You do not even want to ask her about classes. The Student Union decides what she must do as presi- dent, and as Amber says ‘‘I work for the students who ideally should be telling me what to do rather than what I’ve been asked to do here, which is to tell the students what Ido. Want to tell yourstudent union Presi- dent what to do? email: AALLIN .”’

Kelly Yeo is our Vice-President of Finance (VPF) for 1995/96. Luckily for us, Kelly is a fourth year Business student with a specialty in Accounting. If she cannot keep our books in order, no one can. The VPF keeps the financial records of the SU, and prepares financial reports. She is responsible for informing the SU of all financial matters, and any other such duties as they arise. If you want to talk to Kelly, you can reach her at the Barn during the following hours: Monday 1:00pm - 2:45pm, Tuesday 10:15am -2:15pm, and Wednesday 10:30am - 2:45pm. ‘‘I hope to go beyond these duties and help make this year at UPEI a great one!

Students may find it difficult to understand each VP’s jobs on a daily basis. There is one VP position that almost all students will recognize. That is Vice-

President Operations, Finley Martin. As VPO, Finley’s job is to keep the masses happy and entertained with the main events at the Barn. Like Kelly Yeo, Finley is also a senior business student. Finley is often found in his office negotiated with band managers and publicists, or frantically trying to make it to class. Rumour has it Finley can be found in the pit drinking coffee, but he will never admit it. However, he is a master on the beer questions at Panther Lounge Trivia. Finley is open to any suggestions or comments about what you see at the Barn so ‘‘Don’t hesitate to drop by the Student Union or email me. I’m always eager to hear what you have to say. Here at the student newspaper, we see a lot of Tara Inman -- Vice-President Internal. Tara is a senior doing a double major in math and psychology. The VPI serves as a communication link for students and the SU. She is the liaison between SU and Student services. Her position includes responsibility for overseeing CIMN, the newspaper, and the yearbook. Some of the things Tara is working on are a spring break trip for students and organizing campaigns for AIDS awareness and alcohol awareness. “Tam really looking forward to having a great year this year and I hope to encourage lots of students to get to know the Student Union and what it can do for you.”’

Last, but not least is the position of Vice-President External which is presently filled by third year science student Fidel Murphy. Fidel is no stranger to Student Council as he has previously spent two years} as a student senate rep. As VPE, Fidel acts as a liaison between the Union and all groups outside the University. He must also sit on Senate, and assume the duties of president in case of the President’s absence. Currently Fidel is arranging for speakers to come to the Pit regarding post-secondary funding, and is researching for the upcoming CASA/CFS referendum. There you have it, folks. The beginner’s guide to the Student Union. You may be reluctant to venture into the Barn, but it is worth your while. If you just want to know what is happening in and outside of UPEI, just ask one of the councillors. They would be happy to tell you. Or, you can let them know what you think are the important issues or just whatever issues that concern you. There is more to University life than classes and labs, and the Student Union is the key to enhancing your university career.

Just about every facet of our Univer- sity lives are affected by decisions of the Student Council. Meetings are open to all students at UPEI, so if you are interested in attending call the Barn (566-0530) for meeting times. Watch out, though, if you sound too keen they might just recruit you. This column will keep you all updated on exactly what happens at those weekly meetings.

PUBS:

Vice President of Operations, Finley Martin reported that the year has started out very successfully both with The Irish Descendants and Bob Lambert! He says that we also have great things to look forward to. On October 15, we have the Road Apples, on October 19 is the ever popular CIMN pub, and on October 20 we have Moxy Fruvous coming! And the tickets won’t be expensive. Way to go Finley!

This Week In Student Council

ELECTIONS: There will be student union elect

in October and this gives you a change featured in this very column. There are loads.of positions to be filled. If you aré interested, head down to the Barn and as for details. Nominations open on Octob so ask for your form soon. The election on October 25 and 26, so don’t forget to vote.
