The Irish Landlords
IN SERIOUS TROUBLE PRODUCTIVE,PROPERTY BE PRESENTED PARLIAMENT FOR THEIR RELIEF

The Irish landlords are in trouble over their unproductive perty ductions of rent, which have been very genera! and liberal, they cannot collect even the reduced rents with any degree of certainty, and they are now almost without exception, anxious to sell. A largely attended meeting of landlords washeld on May 16tb, at which the situation, as reported by speakers frém various parts of the country, was shown to be exceedingly unfavorable to the landlords. They have appealed in vain for capitalists outside ef Ireland to come in and purchase their lands, even at yriees which s few years ago would o— been considered absurdly low. This condition of affairs exactly suits the Parnellite party who are urging the tenants not to purchase lands from the landlards, holding out the hope that by standing aloof the proprietors will be furced to sell their property at very low figures. The highest offer that has been advised by any of the Irish lead ers is a seven years’ purchase which is mentioned as acceptable by Mr. Parnel!. The other leaders insist upon a much cheaper rate, Mr. Davitt claim ing that a five year’s purchase is enough, while Mr. Haiey, M. P. for Monaghan, goes sc far as tosay that the landlord ought to be satisfied with one year’s purchase. A strong attempt will be made to force the landlords to recede very materially from their present de- mands, and a significent fact, pointing in this direction, is that the parchases of land for Mr. Parnell’s migration com- pany have suddenly ceased. This con- cern was Originated last March under the name of the Irish land company, with Mr. Parnell as chairman,and with various members of parliament. includ- ing Sir Baldwin Leighton, Jacob Bright and Edmund Dwyer Gray, among the directors. Its object was the thinning out of the congested districts in Ireland by*buying land in less thickly pepulat- ed portions of the Island, and sellin, it on easy terns to residests of the crowd- ed districts, who would thus be enable to spread out over the whole entire country. Several large purchases of land were made by this company, but these have suddenly ceased, and it is evident that the company believes the market is falling. All these phases of the situation were fully discussed at the meeting oflandlords in Dublin, and a deputation was appointed to present a memorial to parliament, praying the government to adopt measures to faeili- tate the sales of land to tenants.

Death of An Inventor.
Hon. C. H. McCormick, whe died at Chicago on Tuesday, inthe 75th year of his age, was the inventor of the fa- mous reaper. He wasa Virginian by birth, of Scotch-Irish descendants, and inherited his inventive faculties from his father. He worked up the idea of his reaper and harvester by practical experiment, and has achieved for him- self as the result renown, honor and profit in every part of the werld. He was able to get the benefit of his own invention, an epportanity whieh com- paratively few inventors have. His wealth is very great. Mr. MeQormick wes a member of the Presbyterian de- nomination. He founded the North- western Theologicul Seminary and en- dowed it with $200,000. He has also endowed Professorhips in the Washing- ton and Union Seminaries of Virginia, and has given away large sums in unos- tentatious charities. Mr. McCormick was an esteemed citizen of Chicago.

Bark Sokoto, Capt. Crocker, from Singapore Dee. 24,reached Boston Sun- day night last. When twenty-two days out, a seaman named C. Anderson was sent aloft to secure the topgallant- sail, and while passing a rope areund the yard, he lost his balance, missed his hold and fell overboard. The bark Was running along ata very fair speed, and — him by along distance be- fore she could be brought up to the wind, But a life buoy was thrown to him as quickly as possible, which kept up his courage. Finding that his cloth- igg was interfering with his buoyancy, he stripped off most of it and managed to keep afloat and in good condition for oper two hours, until] the boat reached
