At one place on the precipitous banks of the Snake, ene of those uaderground rivers comes gushing into the light from a cleft high up in the basaltic walls, where it leaps in the form ofa cataract into the torrent below. Where this stream hasits origin, orat what point it is swallowed up, is utterly un- known; though it isbelieved that its soureos are a long way up in the north country. Besides becoming the chan nels of living streams, these lava con- duits are frequently found impacted with ice masses, which never entirely melt.

Remarkable Longevity.

Margaret Muuro, who recently died at Seoisburn, Pictou, aged 106, retain-

ed her health aed faculities up to the

day of her death, regularly attending to her household affairs. She was al-

ways aregular attendant of church, travelling on foot to some place. Until she was 102 years old, she travelled to and from her place of residence to that of her daughter's, a distance of 14 miles, without any attendance. She emigrat- ed with her parents, the late Alexander and Margaret Murray, from Suther landshire, Scotland, 82 years ago, when they settled on the farm on which the Kirk church of Scotsburn now stands. She was married 80 years aco and = has been a widow 34 years. She belongs to a family of remarkable longevity for which perhaps it would be ditficale to find 2 comparison. Her own age, 106 ; Christy MeIntosh,103; Willian Murray, 86; John Murray, 91; and Donald Mur- vay, 87.— Halifax Herald. odie The “Sponger.”

We know of nothing that is more soul elevating to the publisher of a news paper than to see a man refuse to take vis local paper, and all the time sponging on bis neighbor tor the read- ing of it. When we ask a man to sub- scribe for our paper we do so simply becnuse it makes the heart “‘flob”’ from one side to the other with joy,when we hear bim say: “1 take more papers now ‘han I read,” and find him seated on some neighbor's door-step eagerly watcning our carrier to get a glimpseat the local page before the owner of the paper takes itin the house. There is an “eterna! fitness” in seeing a mer- chant or mechanic refusing to advertise in his home paper, and then consider himself justly entitled to a share of the trade which a newspaper brings to town.

The recent suezesses of Mr. Adams in his own suit against Coleridge, and Mrs, Weldon in her action against Dr. Winslow of Lor- don, are likely to add tothenumber of amateur Jaywers. One cause of this is the enormous expense, arising out of the profession being divided into attor- ney and counsel, which necessitates em- ployment of both, even in small casee. The papers are full of correspondence on the sabject, and Mrs. Weldon has contributed a letter, in which she says: “The law itself is a gigantic fraud, while a lawyer is a gigantic mistake al-

A tug exploded the other day in a Chicago dock and killed five men. A grain elevator stood near by, and fitty feet above the dock, on ‘this elevator, imprinted in blood is the perfect out- line of a human form,with hands spread apart and heid heigh above the heau. ‘The impress of the face, body and legs were quite distinct, and it was evident ibat the men had beeun projected with terrific force from ihe deck of the tug up into the air, and against the eleva- tor wall, dropping back, crushed terrib- ly. to the duck below.
