Franklin's Expedi on. The New York Ilcialll has some interest— ing information concerning ilie Expedition 'of Captain llull which started to find traces of Sir John Franklin and his party. Some limpertantdiseorc on have been made, and our readers will peruse the extracts given below with interest. The information is furnished by Dr. Gould, of Dublin, who has been during tile=past two years in the Polar regions :—

“Dr. Gould arrived at New London, Conn..n few days since. on board a whaling ship, from Cumberland Inlct, and states that in Au'vust, 1807, he spent. some tinn- wlth Mr. flail, who was then at ltepulse Bay. Captain Hall is confident of the identity at Captain Crozier with one of the men as described to have perished, us the natives not. only gave Captain Cruzici-‘s name, but were in ossessioii of certain articles that belong: to trim and his companion. Mr. Hall obtained from these ESI‘llllllililX Capt. Crozier‘s watch, a gold chronometer, mad.- tw Arnold and Dent of London, besides some small articles of silver and trinkets belonging to their outlit. These relics Mr. “all now holds, and they have been seen and handled by Dr. Gould. Captain Croaier‘s companion, who died with him, is believed to have been astewnrt oi either {he Fi'ebu: or Terror, us the natives say he was a server of food, but could not recol- lect his name.

The natives also states that they have among them, near Southampton island, a piecs of gold bullion irhicli belonged to Capt. Crozicr, and is believi‘d to have located part of one of his equalettes. 'l‘iii: approaching Presidential Election in the United States is engaging the ac- tive attention of that energetic people, in every State of the Union. Vermont and Maine have already fort-shadowed their decision in their recent State elections of Governors and State legislators, in each of which the Republicans have had large majorities. The general opinion is that Grant and Colfax will be returned, but a large majority in their favor is not antici- pated by their more judicious friends. Doubtlcss the present context, to a great. cxtcnt,is one between those who have won and those who have lost in the late civil war. The Republicans are desirous of completing the work of reconstruction, to which they have placed their hands, claiming that none understand how to set the national house in order, or know how to cement the disorganized materials so effectually. The Democrats, on the other hand, are equally zealous in their opposition, but in effecting their object are likely to lose more than they will gain by some of" their auxiliaries. As in France a. few years ago, it was found that the prestige of a name carried with it a great influence, so is it with the Republi- cans oftlie United States, who find in the name of Grant good material for a popular canvas, while the excellent pri- ‘3": and public character of Mr. Colfax is favorable also to the same issue.

In the South the expectations of the Colored pcople have not been realized. They say that the Republicans made pro- mises to them which have not been ful- filled, and doubtless at the forthcoming clcctioii many of" them, from an intuitive sense, that to a great extent for a long time to come they will be dependent upon ‘ their old masters, and no dealt in some instances, out of attachment, will be iii- duced to vote against the Republican Ticket, and in favor of the planters, who will support the Democratic rather the Radical Ticket. That tl‘is will be the case sccms further probable from the fact : that already Democratic clubs, composed entirely of negroes, are springing up in various places in the South, with an ap- parently settled determination to support that party. Ilut while this is what. is ,occorriug in several of the late disaffected ;States, we notice that in Georgia, where ltlic rights of the negro \verc supposed to i be better understood than in some other i States, advantage has been taken of ‘an old clause in the constitution of that State, by means of which the colored members have been expelled from their seats in the House of Representatives in that Statc. These men are represented as being possessed of respectable attain- tncnls, and before withdrawing, united in preparing and prcsonliug, a moderate and well wri‘tcn protest, in which they remind the House how the colored pco- plc stood by the whites in the South, evcn unto death, during the war; deny the legality of the decision arrived at; express their willingness to retire rather than risort to acts which might, in it time of political excitement, produce civil strife, and express a hope that an ultimate appeal to Congress and the jus- ticc of the American people, will in due time rectify the wrong. It is worthy of notice that in this protest they were joined by twelve of the uliitc Republican members.

This action of the Georgia Legislature, is denounced by respectable journals in several parts of the United States, and repudiated by one of the colored members before he retired, named Turner, in an able and effective speech, who by such action, has, ass matter of course, been driven into opposition. This man was liimsclfonce ii slave, but by dint of per- severance and a diligent study of his books while others slept, has qualified himself to rcadlluently iii Latin, Greek, and Hebrew, and gave good attention also to other departments of study. the Scriptures correctly in the greatest number of languages. llis proposition, however, met with no response. The effect of this temporary triumph of the whites in Georgia will be to increase the number of votes for Grant. and Colfax uniting the colored people in the South.

\\'hat is loudly complained of in most of the States lately in Rebellion, is that in ti time of peace, and without any uc- cessity for it, they have been and are yet governed by martial law, and culinicratc many instances of despotism and oppres- uiou which have been perpetrated upon them. The Democrats, though, have a dangerous ally, which will stifle many appeals that would otherwise meet with a friendly response, ii the Ku Klux Klan, whose acts of violence have only in mod- cru tithes, been exceeded by the Scpoys of ludia. The negrocs in Mississippi and Alabama may organize Democratic Clubs, but it is not likely that they will in Georgia, Florida, or South Carolina. The probability is, that the proceedings against the nt-grocs in Georgia will find it response in the South, that will more than counteract any influence which the Ku Klux Klan organ ation can bring to bear against the white Unionists on whom in Kentucky they have rocked their vent,- cues in throats and acts which are dis- gratvful, cruel, and diabolicully wicked.

The feeling in the South against the Republican element in the north is doubt- less strong and bitter, and much remains to be effected before a patriotic love for the UNION will be again in the ascendaiit in each State of the American Republic. This, however, is no more than what it is natural t.) look for after the ordeal through which the Republic has passed. The Republicans, no doubt, have a sound- er and noblcr principle running through their platform than their opponents, but it is undeniable that its beauty has been grcatly obliterated by many of the acts of those in authority. and as a result a success is rendered doubttul, that. ought to have been certain, and although the Republicans may carry their Candidates triumphantly through the eontcst,itwill be owing as much to the folly of the Democrats, as to the strength and popul- arity of their party.
