THE ALASKA BOUNDARY.

| [t 18 an interesting fact that two P. E. Islanders have now in hand the Canadian case in respeet totbe Alaskan boundary, Sir Louis Davies and Mr. Joseph Pope are on their way to England. Con- cerning their mission the Toronto Globe has the folowing despatch from Ottawa :

“Statements that Mr. Reginald Tower, sritish Charge d’Affsires at Washington, and secretary Hay have arrrived at an agreement regarding @ tentative settlement of the Alaskea boundary difficulty may be authentic, butche Cauadian Government has n@ information regarding the alleg- edagreement. Sir Louis Davies and Mr, Joseph Pope, Under Secretary of State,are now On their way to London to lay the Canadian case before Lord Salisbury. Even if Mr. Tower and Col. Hay have come to an understanding there need be no fear that Lord Salisbury by acting preci- pitately will render Sir Louis and Mr. Pope’s mivsion fruitless. How he will be impressed with the Canadian case is ano- ther matter. Although Canada’s claim is eo strong agto admit of no diapule be- tweer, Canadian politicians, and, although eminent English publicists hold that we are in the right, Downing street seems to have, to speak mildly, a very open mind on the subject. Sir Louis Davies is an undoubted authority on the Alaskan question, and Mr. Pope, who has intimate knowledge of it, has prepared an exhaus. tive memorandum on the subject. Lord Salisbury has been appraised of the de- parture of the Canadians for London, and uotil they shal] bave conferred with the British Premier and Mr. Chamberlain there need be no feliance plaved on either London or Washington reports to the effect that any settlement has been con- summated.”

decision of Friday’s Cabinet Council to send ten thousand soldiers there, wiil pro- ceed to Natal, bringing the totel number ef men in thatcolony up to 16,000. Reinforcements numbering 5,000 men will be drawn from India.

The Northumberland Fusiliers will em- bark next Saturday for Cape Colony, leaving for Southampton. The first Roya] Suesex Regiment has been ordered to be ready toembark within three days. An infantry brigade with a division of field artillery, from Aldershot, with eigh- teen gune bas been erdered to leave for the Cape in ten days.

It is understood that General Sir Redvers Baller will sail for Capetown next Satur- day. The Indian authorities are char- tering steamships to transport troops to South Africa as rapidly as possible.
