Six,—The Scott Act has been in force some years in this Province, and those who believe in its eflicacy have left nothing un- done to enforce its provisions, Our leading men, lay and clerical, with the ollicers of the law at their command, from the Stipen- diary Magistrate dowa to the special con- stable, have been persevering in their efforts to bring to speedy jusiice those per- sons who violate the law by selling intoxi- eating drinks. But we doubt very much if ramsellers, as a whole, are opposed to this Ax It is undeniable that four-fifths of them are never re sched by its provisions, and they know well that selling bad rum without payiag for license 1s a lucrative business. Our clergy as a body were strongly in favor of the Scott Act at the country elections for repeal, and owing in a great measure to this effort it was at that time sustained. Since then no person can plead that it has not had a fair trial. Whether any or all of these gentlemen have since seen fit to inodify their views in reference to this act I cannot say. If they have not it is due to its less enlightened opponents that those gentlemen come down for a moment from their lofty pedestal and show the public the many benefits derived from its rigid enforcement. Failing to do this the Scott Act must stend condemned as a huge farce. it will not do to tell us they lack the sym- pathy of the laity or that the general and local governments are not with them, or that the public morals are at a low ebb. The vital question is, *‘ Hasthe Scott Act, with all its provisions and aforesaids, lessened the nuinber of liquor sellers or the quantity of liquor consumed, or the num- ber of drinkers?’ We insist on a direct answer to this question, as it covers the whole ground of contention. Mere asser- tion or frothy declamation or temperance harangue will not do. We want facts and figures. On this we stand or fall.
