Three Incendiary Fires.

Last night, shortly before twelve o'clock, fire was discovered in the stable of Joseph , Gallant, in the rear of his hotel, the Far- mer'’s Home, Upper Great George Street. The fire, which started in the hay in the loft, was fortunately discovered before it had made very great progress, and was extinguished before it had done any great amount of damage. Had the fire not been discovered when it was, the probability is that the horses in the stable would have been cremated, as the burning hay was | falling from the loft to the stable fluor right | at one of the animal’s feet. The fire it) is believed, was the work of an inendiary.

About the same time a dastardly attempt was made to set fire to the premises of Mrs. Geo. W. Milner, adj ‘ining Mr. Gailant’s A quantity of paper saturated with kero- sene vil was placed upon the seat of the water-cluset, and a match applied. For- tunately, some person saw the blaze made by the burning paper, and it was promptly extinguished. The interior of the closet’ was somewhat scorched.

This morning Mr. James Beales, who lives on the corner of Great George and Grafton Streets, near the scane of the other two fires, made the alarming discovery that some persun had also attempted to burn him cut. Kerosene vil was spilled over the seat and walis of the water closet in the rear of his premises and a match applied. After burning some paper off

the walls and scorching the seat, the fire went out without any assistance. A card of matches wasfound on the seat of tlie

Beales’ stable was burned down by an in- cendiary.

Three fires in the one block and all on the same night, makes it look very much as if some person was desirous of seeing that portion of the city levelled to the

If “cleanliness is next to godliness,” the Japanese ought to rank very high in the moral scale, for there is so people so univer- sally given to bathing. The number of bath houses in Tokio is 1.200, and the average daily attendance at each is 700. This is an index of the use of the bath throughout the oountry.

The French and English authorities are ia constant communication on the subject of the telephone line between London and Paris, It has been decided to lay # double cable accross the channel, the second to be used in case of accident to the firat. The charge for three tninutes conversation will be fixed at ten shillings ($2.56), and it is expected that the line-will be in woking order by the beginning of March.

The scheme for removing Nelson's famous flagship, Victory, from her moorings in Ports- mouth harbor to the Themes, in connection with the Epglish naval exhibition to be opened next May, has been abandoned, the vessel's timbers being too rotten to stand the strain of the voyage; but a full-sized reproduction of the famous eld three-decker has been ordered, and is now being executed.

Much money and work have been expeuded the past year in improving the waterways between the city of Leeds and the sea. This great centre of the cloth industry in England desires to improve its outlet to the sea and a ship canal is now proposod connecting the city more satisfactorily with the coast. While this is only a project as yet, it indicates the prevalent desire for large canala.

A census of the German empire was taken last month, and it shows the same notable growth of cittes and towns observable in other countries. In five years the number of cities with the pepulation over 100,000 has increased from 21 to 86, and in the same peried some of the increases were very large. Berlin has now a population ot 1,574,435, Hamburg 570,430, Leipsic 35%,272, M unich 334,710, Bresian 234,710 and Cologne 282,537.

Misstonany Soctery.— Sermons on behalf of the Methodist Mixsionary Society will be reached in the First and Second Methodist churches on Sanday morning next, 2oth inst., at ll o'clock. The annual missionary meet- ings will be he ld in the same churches on the evening of the same day, at seven o'clock. The sermons will be preached and addresses will be delivered by the Rev. Bir. James, of Murray Harbor, and the Rev. Mr. King, of Tryon. The pestors of the churches will also take part in the servicee. Experiments were made last year in the Mediterranean, to ascertain how tar daylight penetrates under water. In very clear water near Corsica, and eighteen miles from land, the limit of daylight has been found by means of photographic plates, to be about 1,580 feet.
