New Process of Enameling.

A London firm has introduced a new process to supersede the use of Berlin black and black lead for protecting cast fron. ‘The casting is coated with a film of enamel, which is so thin that even the finest details on the metal are pre- served. This en:nmel is said to be ab- solutely proof against Pust, and preserves iis qualities at any temperature up to a brigut red heat. All colors are obtain- ables, including goid and silver, bri zat or duil, and as many as are wished can be produced at one casting, Tie process is sid to offer great facilities for decorative work of wll kinds.

Utilizing Unprepared Coal Dust,

A metied of using coal dust without special preparation is being tested by two Berlin engineers, Wegner and Biu- mert. By means of a funnel provided Wilh an agitator at the Lottom, tie dust is made to enieran = air-tube, when it is cairied to the furnace by a cur- rent of air, wiich also works the agi- tutor. The furnace is lined with bricks, aud the incandescent partitions cause the rapid and complete combustion of the coal dust,—Ciicago Journal of Com- merce.

A Mammoth Electrical Seheme.

A plan for the distribution of electric puwer over a good portion of England is proposed by A. B. IH. Tuwate, says The Chicago Journal of Commerce, His idea is to burn the fuel at the mines, where it cost but little, and then transmit the power resulting from the combustion of the coal and gas by high pressure al- ternating currents of electricity. Mistakes With Poultry.

The man who puts 15 eggs under a hen, instead of 11 or 13, so as to make sure of a good lot of chicks, wants more than he will get. We don’t like to deal with that kind of a person because he displays greediness in the first place and lack of good chicken sense in the second place, writes a Tennesseean to Southern Culti- vator. A hen will in nine cases out of ten hatch more chickens from 18 eggs than from 15 eggs simply from the tact that not more than one or twovhensin 8 dozen ordinary farmyard hens are large enough to cover 15 eggs.

Another mistake consists in consoli- dating broods by giving all the chickens ta one hen when two or more hatch at the same time. Don’t do it. It may seem allright, but itis all wrong. In warm, dry weather the large broods may do fairly well, but just let a rainy, chilly spell come along and then see how fast the sinaller and weaker ones drop out of the race. Let each hen have her chick- eus. It would be much better and the chickens would grow faster and larger if each brood consisted of only seven or eight chickens. There is no disguising the fuct that the secret of success in poultry keeping consists in keeping all fiecks small.

The person who advocates putting 100 or 200 little chickens all in one bunch in a brooder knows nothing about the ne- cessity to observe natural conditions in poultry raising. Nature intended for s hen to sit on a small number of eggs and to care for asmall number of chickens only, and nature never intended fer 100 hens to run, eat and roost together, nor 100 chickens to be penned up together.

Sheep In Orchards,

Mr. J. 8. Woodward, at a meeting of New York horticulturists, said that he always made a sheep pasture of his or- chard, and it was true that sheep made the best insecticides he ever had. He would advise keeping 100 sheep on every 10 acres of orchard. To feed them enough, give them plenty of linseed meal and bran, which will make them ravenous for apples. The feed, the ap- ples and the scattered grass had answer- ed an excellent es and although he had not plowed his orchard in 14 years it was in excellent condition.
