Tue Borer Woru.—This insect, so des- tractive to vessels’ bottoms elsewhere, has for some time past been suspected of infesting the waters of the Bay of Fundy. On the 10th inst., several pieces of timber from the docks of Digby and New Pronswick were received at the Department of Railways avd Canals, Ottawa, to show the ravages cause by these insects to the wharves in the places referred to. The timbers were completely periorated by the worms. —£z.

A sHort time ago the Irish Societies of Won- treal made an investigation into a charge made in a New York period cal insinuating that Montreal contaiced a Fenian informer Mr. F. B McNamee was believed to be the party referred to, and took occasion to deny the char. e, supverting his denial with a letter from Sir John Macdonald. Now the Montreal Post has reiterated the charge, aad added others of even @ more serious nature. The result is that an action for libel has been entered,by Mr. McNamee.

Tue counsel for Mason, the man who at tempted to shoot Guiteau and was recently sentenced to severe penalties, has prepared a petition for a writ ef habeas corpus, on the ground that a court-martial has no jarisdiction in time of peace; and that even if jurisdiction exists, the punishment inflicted is excezsive and illegal. Mason says he don’t want to be pardoned by any Guiteau President, and merely asks that provision should be made for the support of his wife and family.

THe prospects of “ good wheat crop ia the United States is encour aging. A Cincinnati dispatch of the 16th says :—Reports from the wheat crop, covering po.nts in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas. Michivan, Kentucky, and Tennessee, and from afew places in ot er Westera States, from which it makes the con clusion that the winter crop of wheat now promises an outcome equal to any previous year, and if the spring sowing is an average one the wheat crop of 1882 may be counted on as reaching 500,000,000 bushels, with the chances of even larger results than the wheat crop of 1850.

As a consequence every clerk has been discharged. It is also stated that at the dictation of the Syndicate the Government has withdrawn from entry all even numbered sections on the C. P. AN interesting suit at law, involving 4 hus band’s right to his wife’s wedding present, hes recently been decided in England by Lord Chief Justice Coleridge Underao ex cution issued by a milliner defendant for an indebt- edness contracted by the wife before her marri- age, a sheriff had seized certain jewelry, valued at $5.50, to satisfy a judgment for $5,000. The lady’s husband, Mr Willams, a gentleman of fortune, brought suit to recover this jewelry, and showed that it had been given to Mrs. Williams by her friends, at the time of her marriage as wedding presents. Lord Coleridge ruled that, under the circum: stances, the property had passed to the hus- band, and the defendant had no right to ir in satisfaction of a judgment obtained against the separate estate of his wife.

Twenty-five houses have been burned near Northampton, and a hundred persens rendered homeless.

In the Commons this evening, Mr. Glad- atone submitted a message from the Queen, asking provision for Prince Le»pold upon his approaching marriage. Mr. Gladstone announced that _ would, on Thuraday, move to consider the same.

Mr. Labouchere announced that he would oppose the motion.

The steamer to leave Pictou on such regular day in each week as the estmaster General may appoint, and proceed to Amberst and Cape de Meule, Magdalen Islands, and re- waining one day at (he Islands for exchange ot Mails, to return to Picton, calling both ways aud exchanging Mails at Georgetown aud Souris, Prince Edward Island. On every fourth trip the steamer is to preceed from the Magtislen [slands to Gaspe and back before returning to Pictou, calling for exchange of Mails at Gaspe Basin, and at Perce weather permitting. The Posimaster General will ree Quire a first-class sea-going steamer for thi service, and the tender must give a full de- se ription of the steamer offered —specifying name, tonnage, speed and accommodation for passengers and freight, also the price asked fur each round weekly trip between Pictou and the Magdalen Islands, and for each mon hiy round trip between the Isanuds and Guspe.
