Here is a brief chronicle of the birth of Queen Victoriin the form of an acknow- ledgment of the certificate forwarded, as required by custom, to the Home Secretary, who happened at that time to be Viscount Sidmouth. It reads as follows:

Goulbourn, Esq. : ik, I im directed by Lord Sidmouth to acknowledge the receipt of a certificate noti- tying the delivery of Her Royal Highness the Yuchess of Kent of a Princess, at a quarter past four o clock this morning. The infant Princess was not then successor to the throne, but was made so by subse- quent events, and the writer of the official letter of acknowledgment could have had no idea how important an event he was helping to record.

-It is such a rare thing to see a good word for Canada in Grit print that we take pleasure in copying from the Whitby Chronicle, one of the oldest Reform papers in Canada, the following: Canada appears to be moving forward splendidly this year. Reports from every new tract of country show that large settlements are being made and great energy being displayed. Hun- dreds of miles of new railways are being stretched. In the older portions of the Dominion the papers claima large extent of progress, in many instances matters being described as booming. In mostly every case cities and towns claim large in- creases in population and assessment, while trade is always held to be flourishing. There appear to be no idlers in the whole Dominion, every person having plenty to do, and ali being contented and prosperous. Never did we read of the outlook being more encouraging. What our people should now strive to cultivate is a wholesome Canadian sentiment, a spirit of united thought and unselfish action. This with our boundless resources should enable Canada to move steadily ahead, as has ever been the case for half a century. The trouble with Canadians is, we do nut allow ourselves to enjoy prosperity, do not foster contentiment, but foolishly lend too great an ear to agitation,

must object to the method of certain names, which conveys sion that it was principally their efforts that the game was won. — The whole Abegweit team Was good, Every man appeared to do his work well, and it is not fair to single out One or two of the names. Of course, a half-back’s play may be a little more noticeable than that of a forward, still, without a good set of for- wards, the half-backs can’t prevail much. Each man in the game has a special part to perform, and on each man’s work depends the success of the game. A misplay by a quarter-back or full-back will often lose the match. Having carefully watched the game on Saturday last, | think this year's team was the best that has yet played off the Island, and with a few exceptions the men played exceedingly well together. Before closing, allow me_ to notice the kind manner in which the excursionists were treated by the officers of the Princess of Wales, especially Captain Cameron and Mr. Collins, who appeared to do all in their power to make the trip enjoyable. News Notes. The phosphate mines in the Ottawa dis- trict of which there are now some thirteen, ire being worked briskly, and a good deal of ore has been shipped to Europe. The Citizen expects that by the end of the month several thousand tons will have been for- warded. Packing salmon seems to be a profitable business in Alaska. One cannery, situated on Kodiak Island, paid a dividend on last year’s operations of 88 per cent., and had besides a surplus of $13,000. The Karkuk Company recently declared a dividend of $125,000, which was at the rate of about $1 per case on the pack. Twenty-tive barrels of sealskins in pickle, brought from Victoria, have just been shipped over the C. P. R. via Montreal, consigned to London, Eng. When our fur and skin merchants learn the importance this trade, sarsthe Vancouver World, exportations to England and other countries from British Columbia will as- sume very large proportions.

by the Quebec Legisiature to do printing, lithographing, binding, and publishing,

under the name of the Sabiston Lithogra- phic and Publishing Co. The members are Messrs. Alexander Sabiston, Richard White, David Morrice, Smeaton White, of Montreal! ; and William White, of Sher- brooke. The capital stock is to be $40,000.

He was once introduced as ‘* Dr. Carter.” Immediately his friend saw his error and corrected himself. ‘* Never mind,” said the doctor, ** it’s only a slip of the pen.”

A very promising young journalist re- marks that ‘‘ when au enthusiastic editor describes the bride as bonny, and an en- vious compositor sets her up as bony, as was done the other day, hope for a season bids the world farewell, and freedom shrieks as the compositor falls at his form, brained by the brother of the blooming bride.”
