They have access to thousands of dollars that is not theirs; and it makes them feel like little chil- dren ina candy store. No, I am not talking about our pro- vincial leaders. I am referring to our courageous Student Un- ion.

Anewtax upon our gen- erosity has been proposed in relation to the SU building fund. Currently, the levy ex- ists as a $20 donation, one which every student has the right to reclaim each semes- ter. For now we will ignore the fact that it is pretty sneaky to (a) take our money, (b) lock it in a safe somewhere, (c)

force us to go looking for it, and then, (d) make us feel guilty for taking it back. At least it was workable; and the students had some choice in the matter. Now there is talk of a ‘mandatory donation.’ This, my friends, is pure gen- ius.

“Mandatory donation’ - - what an incredible idea!! In one fell swoop, the council has revolutionized politics. This about its uses. At the end of the year, we won’t have to pay taxes, we’ll just have ‘mandatory contributions.’ We can now have ‘voluntary drafts’ during wartime, ‘op- tional rights,’ ‘necessary luxu- ries.” The sheer scope of this achievement will take decades to fully understand. And it was our student council that thought of this. I am over- whelmed with pride; and stag- gered by their arrogance.

It seems our glorious leaders made a promise to the University that they would collect a certain amount of money from students to be used for building renovations. The university, then, would match the total collected by

council. Suddenly, the coun- cil has realized that they can- not deliver. So what do they do? Do they apologize for making such a ridiculous promise in the first place? NO!! Do they go to students and ask for their help or beg for their forgiveness? NO!! Do they hold a fund-raiser, a rally, or a ‘save-our-butts’ campaign? NO!! Do they get together ata meeting and come up with a way to stick it to the people they represent? Yup. Their solution is sly, conniv- ing, insensitive and utterly immoral. Congratulations, boys and girls, you’re ready for the big leagues now.

Oh, they offer dozens of excuses for the increase. “They did the same thing be- fore, for Main renovations.” Lovely. This is like saying “We’ve robbed the students in the past and they didn’t com- plain.” How about “But it is going towards a good cause.” Does this mean it is okay fora mugger to steal $20 from me, as long as he donates it to charity? Do they think they are all Robin Hood? Last time I checked, Robin Hood stole

from the rich. Students do not qualify.

On Wednesday, No- vember 27, there will be an information session at the AVC starting at one o’clock, concerning this increase. If you can’t make that meeting, then go to the voting session on Sunday, December 1. I
