There is every indication that this letter was not written by Co! Haywrod, but may have been authorized by bim.

In the first place it is not written on paper heariog the official stamp of the navy, apd althou; gh fairly well written | and in a legible hand, its phraseology aud geveral makeup does not indicate its coming from one of the wir at offic -ra cf | the U. 3. service.

The paper on which it is written is of emall size, embellished with gilt scroll work. It was evidently written by young Dunphy or acompanion to apprise his aunt of the fact that he had shipped. His reference to his burial indicates that be hada premonition of his imperding fate should he Jand on Spanieh soil.

His sister, Miss Jesephiue Dunphy, to whom be refers, ia the wearest surviving relative, andaresilent of Souris, P. E. Island.

Young Dunphy comes of unquenchable fighting stock and his reference to his possible burial is very significant. 4e isa

sample of the many fisherman who have recently been recruited for the navy from this port.

Mavor Davis ordered the flags on the city hail and public buildings to be dis played in his honor and the fishing vesesls generally follow their example,

OBITUARY.

Died at Fort Pierce, South Dakota, on May 3lst, poi of cancer of the stomach, ‘Fannie E. Ross, beloved wife of John 5. Fletcher, E+q., aged forty-six years.

The funeral service was conducted by Revs. W.A. and Heniret'a Lyman at the home on Main street Thursday afternoon, land a large concourse of sympathizing ‘friends paid their last tmbute to the de- ceared by their attendance.

Mrs. J. J. Fletcher was the eldest daughter of the Jate Jobn Ross, Keq., of Georgetowr ,one of the firet Superintendents of schools in Prince Edward Island.
