—The Montreal Gazette expresses the opinion that the “killing” of Mr. Charlton’s Sunday Observance bill will not canse very much regret. Our contemporary points out that while in its original shape the bill was calculated to produce little good, in its amended form it was veeless. The measure was a compromise, and com- promises on matters appertaining to the principles of christian duty must be fail- ares. It prohibited some kinds of labor on Sunday and permitted others nota whit more necessary. It allowed the canals to be operated for the benefit of grain dealers; it forbade daily newspaper publishers. to work save on lines that would in practice deprive their employes of the day’s cessa- tion from labor they now enjoy. It forbade Sunday trains, but assumed that railway operating staffs would be on duty on Sunday in case they should be called on for a work of mercy or necessity. In fact, says the Gazette it was so framed as to fail in its purpose.

Movrreau, June 20. Donald Morrison, the Megantic outlaw, was released from St. Vincent de Paul Penitentiary on Monday, and died at the Royal Victoria Hospital yesterday. The poor fellow’s wish to die out of prison was but barely realized.

Toronto, June 20. Nominations for the Provincial Legisla- ture took place yesterday throughout the Province of Ontario. There is not a single constituency allowed to go by default, a circumstance almost unknown in the Pro- vince.
