A correspondent at Sommerside furnishes the following particulars :—That part of Malpeqne known as Prince Town, near Prince Town wharf, with the exception of two or three highly respectable families, is settled by a gang of people with very unenviable characters.

It appears there had been some alter- cation between Roderick Howell and W1l- liam Wallace about fence poles that had been used to enclose some stacks of grain. Wallace was in the act of removing the poles when Howell came upon him with a loaded shot gun, which he fired at Wallace with deadly effect.

Wallace is a married man with some family. He married the widow of James Blackmore, a man who was drowned at Darnley a few years ago.

Wallace had been in the employ of Messrs. D. & P. McNutt, who give him an excellent character.

At Brussels the trial of Leon and Armand Peltzer for the murder of. William Bernays, a noted lawyer, concluded on the 23rd inst. Both were found guilty and sentenced to death. The case created a great sensation.

Archbishop Hannan has now been removed and the consecration of Dr. O’Brien will likely take place early in the new year.—Halifar Chronicle, Dec. 24.

St. Paul's Concert and Readings.

A large audience gave attentive hearing to the readers aad musicians in St. Paul s Schoolroom last night, at the Concert and Readings in aid of the funds of the Ladies Industrial Aid Society. Except that the darkness of the porch made the entrance of iate comers noisy, and therefore somewhat distracting, good order was maintained throughout. Mr. A. B. Warburton, was in the chair. The programme was of a conveni- ent length, and weil arranged, and the selec- tions were long enovgh for every purpose, not so lorgastotire. The readers were

Scope and volume, are the charm of goed duets for the piano, but the clear treble notes and a well sustained bass in ‘‘Schulhoff’s Concert? Walk,” by the Misses Holl, were additions! delights. The Misses Rayden, reproduced a favourite in Herolds overture to ‘‘Zampa,”’ and Misses Hobkirk and Dunn played the ‘ Reveil du Lion” with a great deal of spirit and force. We enjoyed a rich treatin Miss Hensley’s ac- curate interpretation of an ‘‘ Andante and Rondo Capriccioso,’’ by Mendelssohn, which difficalt solo wasplayed with expression and britliant manipulation. We need more classical music in our concerts, and are glad we have such a capable interpreter as Miss Hensley proved herself last evening. Prof. Earle sang heartily a solo from ‘*Patience,” and inspired much enthusiasm by his clever interpolation of allusions to local celebrities. As an encore Mr, Karle sang, “‘All an account of Eliza,” from *Billee Taylor,” with its smooth melody and amu-ing words. That bewitching song, “‘A Bird in the Hand,” as exempli- fied by the three maids of Lee, was sung in such a pleasing way by Mrs. W. Longworth

Rev. Dr. Benson, Bishop of Truro, who hag accepted the Archbirhopric of Canter- bury, and thus becomes Primate of England is a native of Birmingham, where he com- menced his education, going afterwards to Trinity College, Cambridge, of which he successively became Scholar and Fellow. He graduated B. A. in 1852, M. A. in 1855, B. D. in 1862 and D. D. in 1867. He was for some years an Assistant Master at Rug- by, and was Head Master of Wellington College from its openingin 1858 down to 1872, when he was appointed a Canon Residentiary and Chancellor of Lincoln Cathedral, having been a Prebendry. of that Cathedral for three years previously. He was for . several years Examining Chaplain to the Bishop of Lincoln, and in December, 1876, was appointed on Lord Beaconsfield’s recommendation to the newly founded See of Truro, to which he was consecrated in St. Paul’s Cathedral in the following April. Dr. Benson has published several volumes of sermons, and is one of the contributes to the *‘Speaker’s Commentary on the Bible.” He married in 1859 the daughter of the Rev. William Sidgwick, of Skipton, Yorkshire.

THe man Wallace, shot by Howell, at Princetown, continues in a critical. condition. Last night he eupeteey to have a change for the better, but the doctors are still of opinion he cannot survive. Howell, who is now quietly reposing, says the shooting of Wallace by him was a mistake—‘‘he shot the wrong man ’’—and while he leisur ly reads his Bible to soothe his troubled spirit, he declares his willingness to pay the penalty of his crime, sooner or later, by imprisonment or by hanging.

Murray Harbor Notes.

On the 18th inst., the County Court was held at Murray River for this district. It was presided over by Judge Reddin, who is much respected by all for his patience and justice. Much business was done, and there was a large attendance.

On the 19th inst., a Sabbath School Concert and Christmas Tree was given by the Methodist Congregation at White Sands. The church was beautifully dee- orated by the ladies* The singing was excellent, and the recitations by the child- ren were very good. There was a very large audience, who seemed to enjoy themselves well.

On the 22nd inst., a Sabbath School Concert was given by the children in con- nection with the Bible Christian Church. There was a good attendance. The scholars presented the late superintendart of the school with a Bible and address. A _ suit- able reply was made by Mr W. Hughes. A pleasant time was spent by all.
