New Muritrra Reoeiation.—An Ottawa despatch says that a anew militia regulation has been issued by which if a man who has enlisted wants to leave he will be permitted to retire from the force on the payment of $30. This amount, it is supposed, will cover the value of clothing and kit issued to him for his use as a soldier.

Deatu or A Priest.—We regret very much to hear of the death of Rev. P. %. O’Ryan, D. D., which sad event oecurred at his father’s residence, Sillery, Que., on Wednes- day last, after a brief illness. Father Ryan was born at Sillery, and educated at Laval University, and at the time of his death was in the twenty-seventh year of his age and the fourth of his priesthood. He was for about a year teacher of Philosophy at St. Dunstan's College, during which period he delivered several very interesting and instructive lec. tures. His sermons also were of a high order. His early demise is deeply regretted.

A Burglary Epidemic.
Mowncron, Aug. 27.
General alarm has been caused by numer- ous burglaries in this vicinity, the last re- ported being that of Geo. E. Ford's store at Sackville, which was entered early Sunday morningand the safe blownopen. Amongthe articles taken were several watches and re- volvers, a draft on the National Hide and Leather Bank of Boston, in Geo. E. Ford's favor, for $8875, two drafts in favor of W. W. Wright for $6585 and $360. Also some cash.
An Unpleasant Reception.
Toronto, Aug. 27.
E. S. Cox, ex-broker and Central Bank wrecker was brought here this afternoon by a detective. Over 3000 people had as- sembled on the wharf and hooted and jeered at Cox, and threatened to mob him and throw him into the bay. The police positively refused to admit him to bail. His arrest has caused great excitement here.
Another Defaulter.
Hitipat, Mich., Aug. 27. Chas. W. Waldron, one of the owners and managers of the Waldron Bank, of this city, has absconded, taking money and securities variously estimated at from $60,- 000 to $80,000. The depositors will be paid in full.
Three More Arrests.
Dustin, Aug. 27. The police of Westford to-day arrested John Redmond, his brother William Red- mond, and Edward Walsh, editor of the Wexford People, charged with offences un- der the Crimes Act.
Yellow Jack. JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Aug. 27. To-day there has prevailed most unfavor- able weather, being warm with sunshine, and hot, yet only seven new cases of yellow fever have developed, within three deaths.
Minister Thompson Knighted.
Orrawa, Aug. 28. Hon. J. 8. D. Thompson, Muinister of Justice, has been made a K. C. M.G., in recognition of his services in connection with the fisheries question.

Joseph Archambault, architect, who had been missing since Thursday, was found in Lachine Canal to-night. He had consider- able money with hin.
