Sir John Thompson Defended.

A good man is never without defenders Che attack of the Rev. De. Douglass upon Sir John Thompson has bes mive by por- sons of every class and creed. Among the most prominent of Sir John’s defenders is Mr. Coatsworth, member of Parliament for foronto and a leading and influential Methodist. In the course of a letter to the Ottawa Citizen, Mr. Coatsworth says :

“As a member of the Methodist Charch having great respect for Dr. Douglas, a ven erable minister of that church, 1 was deeply pained at the evident lack of Christian cher. ity and moderation evinced by him on that ‘ecasion. It was alsoa matter of deep re- get to observe Dr. Dougias’ entire m‘scon ception of the public life of Sir John Thorp» sou. The whole tenor of his address shows clearly io me that be was misinformed and the inferences he drew were based on a ataie- ment cf facts which were in every important psrticulsr totally at variance with the true state of the case. I do not yield so any per- son in my jealous care to guard the very in- terests which I believe Dr. Douglas intended by his speech to preserve. At the same time ium fiee to say candidly that after nearly vwo years of intimate relations with Sir John Thompson, I have ever fouad him to be a) courteous, fair, liberal-minded gentleman and 4 stateeman of the highest rank, and I have yet to see the slightest indication on his part to introduce religious questious into politics. The wroog impressions made upon many minds by such addresses as that of Dr. Doug- las have given rise to erroneous opinions cen- cerning Sir John Thompson. These are al- ways dispelled on meeting and hearing him. Dignified in manner, calm and temperate in discussion, logical in debate, seldom asserting @ position that cannot fai:ly be main‘aioed, extieme in nothing, an eathusiastic lover of Canada end British connection, he is loved by

—The report of Mr. Ingalls, of the Geo- logical Survey, to the Dominion Govern- ment, shows that during the past four years the annual mineral production of Canada has largely increased, The value of the coal output bas increased from $4,758,590 to $7,792,175. The nickel industry has been established within that period, and last year the oui put was valued at $2,775,- 976. ‘The production of copper has in- creased from $342,345 to $1,238,780 Ocher minerals, excepting gold, also show @ satisfactory increase.

B., man at present in Torynto, upon reading of the damage done by thestorm in Halifax, N. —Halifax Herald: It is a suggestive fact, in couneciion with the theory advanc

Dr. Douglas that the Roman Catholic church is making use of Sir Joha Thompson to control this country, that the two provinces of this dominion in which the adherenta of that denomination con- sititute a larger proportion of the population than they do in the others—-to wit Quebec and P. E. lsland—were the only two prov- inces in which the present dominion government failed to secure # majority at the last general eleccion. Qucbec, in which the Roman Catholics are as 7 to every 1 _ non-Catholic, returned 38 oppositiun to governmant supporters,—though the governmeas carried pearly all the Protestant district's ia the pro- vince. And P. E. Island, in which the Roman Catholics are withia a fraciiva of one half the population, elected 4 3 its to 2 con- servatives. On the other hand Manitoba, in which the Roman Catholic population is the smallest in proportion to population of any of the provinces, elected 4 conservatives to 1 grit. The moral of which seems to be that ac the last general election the Roman Catholic church did not exercise any undue activity in support of the government of whica Sic John fhempsea is a member.

The government crop bulletin for Manitoba gives the following figures showing the acre- age under crop: Wheat, 875,990; oata 332,- 974; barley, 97,644; peas, 2,188; potatoes, 10,000; roots, 17,498. The acreage of wheat js slightly less than last year. The report states the dairying interest is ia an unfavor- able state, owing to the scarcity of help. Regarding the crop prospec.s it states the outlook ia exceedingly bright and ful’y up to last year’s evormous yield. The farmers are jubilant over the situation.

The annual exam nation of the Bluefield Schovl was held or Wednesday, the 1dch June, under the management of Mr. A. Stitson, whe is a very efficient and painstak- ing teacher. During the short time he hes been with us he has made a marked iimprove- ment in our school. Mr. Wemyss Reid, in a recent magezine article, names certain men as being likely material for the next Liberal Cabinet, Amongst the peers are the Marquis of Ripon, Lord Spencer, the Earl of Kimber- iey, Lord Herschell, the last Liberal Lord Caancellor, and possibly Lord Carringion, the late Governor of New South Wales In the House of Commons, Sir William Har- court, John Moriey, Messrs. Campbeil- Bannermaa, Shaw Lefevre and A. J. Man- della, Sir George Trevelyan, Sir Charles Russel, Mr. Fowler, and possibly Peof. James Bryce and Mr. Labouchere are wen- tioned. Of these Lord Ripon was a fire- brand while Vicervy of India, Lord K-m- berley was the weakest Colonial Secre:ary after Lord Derby that England bas hal in modern times, whilst most of the others are ordinary every day politicians. Mr. Morley is academic, Sur Caarles Russel is really brilliant, Pcof. Bryce is a clever writer and thinker, and Labouchero is hopelessly erratic.
