McGowan, the Catholic bookseller, is making a canvass of the city forthe new Catholic Dietionary of Theology and History, which gives an explanation of all the doctrines and teachings of the Catholic Church. The work treats of 1,600 different subjects and has received the spprobation of Cardinals Man- ning and Newman, together with that of many other distinguished prelates. Lost Oversoarp. --Captain Murchison, of the brig Ze'ica, which arrived bere on Saturday from Liverpool, reports that on the 14th inst , whilein lat. 45,36, long. 35.54, a sea- man named Charles Nicholson, while ¢rawing water over the side of the vessel, fall ov:r- beard. He was not seen until he had floated a good distance aft. Alife baoy was thrown to him, a seaman was sent aloft to watch his position and the vessel put about, made two tacks and remained about for two hours, but could not discover the unfortunate seaman. Nicholson was nineteen years of age and be- longed to the Isle cf Man.
Bears Caprorep-—-The Moncton Times seve: Mr. Coll. McDougall, of Scotch Settle- ment, Parish of Moncton, captured two bears on Wednesday evening of last week. It ap- ears that the bears were making sad havoc with Mr. McDougall’s sheep, and accordingly he set a trap for bold bruin, On Wednesday, a neighbor passing by the trap, observing * young bear caught therein, shot him, Return- ing to the trap later in the evening, they found, to their surprise, that they had also captured the old bear, she bein fastened securely by the hind legs. The bears were taken to the residence of Mr, McUougail, and, we are informed, 2re being visited by large numbers of people.
FataL S#oormnc Accrpent.—A lad named John Hart (colored) twelve years old, was shot through the body at Fred- ericton on Wednesday, from the effects of which he died about 1 o’clock next morn- ing. The accident occurred just back of Mr. Charles Godkin’s place on the Harwell road. The little fellow overheard Dr. Coburn say that a partridge would be very nice for a sick neighbor of his— Mr Parker. He, in company with his four year old brother, started off to get one. They had gone but a short distance from the house when he had occasion to lay the gun down and in picking it up again took hold of it by the muzzle, and while drawing it towards him the hammer be- came caught in some underbrush and, on being released, snapped back on the cap, exploding the charge which, entering his right side, went clear through his body. It is now evident that the Parliamentary ¢umpaign will not pasa off without serious rioting, a8 party feeling, which already runs high, and daily grows more bitter.
The Marquis of Lorne, Liberal candidate for Hampstead, went down to Brantford, seven miles west of London, to deliver a campaign speech. While addressing the electors a mob assaulted him with rotten eggs, and some gaining the platform, smashed his hat over his head. The sup- porters of the Marquis rushed to his rescue, and a tight ensued.
The noble lord now became thoronghly frightened, and hastily departed from the teone, and ran through the streets in a drenching rain to tho railway station, and immediately departed for London. Mean- while the row continued.

Teemer Defeats Hanlan. AvpBany, N. Y,. Oct. 25.
Yesterday’s race between Hanlau and Teemer was the best ever rowed in the United States. Hanlen took water first and tried to row Teemer down in the first mile, but Teemer stayed with him all the time, rowing 34 to Hanlan’s 38. Ai the stake-boat Teemer was leading a clean length, and gving like a “ scared deer.” He made a good turn, and called to Hanlan to ‘‘comeon.” MHanlan seemed to be winded, and in turning the stakebost he fell out of his boat. He wasa ‘‘ dead duck ” before this, however. The mile and a half to the stakeboat was made in 11m. 353., against a strong current, most remark- able time. Teemer rowed leisurely home in 21 minutes and 13 seconds. Teemer was greatly cheered, Hanlan admitted Teemer was the best man. Hanlan backed himself heavily and his friends lost a pot of money. Had Teemer been pushed all the way tiie record would surely have been broken. Ross and Teemer offers to row any two oarsmen on earth for $2,500 a side.
