Oscar Wilde was introduced at a re cent garden-party in London to Mrs. Osgood, of Knebworth House. In the course of a few minutes’ talk it was divulged that the lady was on the eve of departing for America, “Going to America?” said Oscar; ‘‘deah me: what for, now?” ‘“‘To see my husbanu,” was the reply. Oscar stared sleepily at her in astonishment. Dropping languidly into a chair he said: ‘‘Going all the way to America to see your own” (with ac- cent on the own) ‘‘husband? Deah me! What a lovely ideah!”

Remedy for Damp Walls.

The process consists in using two washes or solutions for covering the surface of the walls—one composed of castile soap and water, and one of alum and water. The proportions are three- juarters of a pound of soap to one gal ion of water, and half a pound of alum to four gallons of water, both substan- ‘es to be perfectly clean and dry, and the temperature of the air not above 25 degrees Fahrenheit when the composi- tions are applied.

‘The first, or soap wash, should be laid on when boiling hot with a flat brush, taking care to form a froth on the brick- work. This wash should remain twenty- four hours, so as to become dry and uard before the second or alum wash is ipplied, which should be done in the saine manner as the first. The temper ture of this wash when applied thay be 69 or 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and this slso should remain roe hours before a second coat of soap wash is put ou. These coats are to be applied al ternately until the walls are made im pervious to water. The alum and soap tuus combined form an insoluble com- pound, filling the pores of the masonry ind entirely preventing the water frow entering the wall.— Architect and Builder.

Saved by a Drink,

A child of six years had developed a bad habit of rising in the night to drink from the water bottle, and had been for- bidden in vain. On the night of a recent storm his parents being away, his aunt tucked him safely in bed.

‘‘Now, Dickey,’’ she said, ‘“‘remember I can tell if you go to the water bottle.”’ “Oh no, auntie,’’ he smiled slyly, ‘‘how can you?”

“I can tell,’’ she said with conviction.

“But how?’’ said Dick, skeptically.

“I can,’’ she repeated; ‘‘and since you won't promise, you naughty boy, I shall empty the bottle.’’ And she did, to the young reprobate’s consternation.

In the middle of the night the gable of the house was blown down, and crashed like thunder through the ceiling of master Dick’s room. As his aunt and the servant rushed in a terrible sight met their gaze. The bed was almost hidden by masses of masonry, two iron feet at the head being driven complotely through the floor. With a shriek his aunt feil on her knees. ‘‘O, Dickey! poor Dickey!’’ she cried. ‘‘He’s been killed.’’
