A BAND OF CONSPIRATORS IN 8T PETERS- BURG AND ITs CAPTURE,
Tho Nihilists are at their old! games in Russia. St. Petersburg has been excited more than once last month by reports strenuously denied by the official press of fresh Conspiracies on a larger and more audicious scale than any planved since the late czars assassina- tion, but the details have hitherto been kept secret by the police. Little is known except thata number of per sons have been arrested. The execu- tion of Nihilists at Warsaw on Thurs- day has intensified the excitement in St. Petersburg. From the Russian froutier come full particulars of a con- spiracy which is only indirectly connected with the Warsaw aifair. Three moaths ago the St. Petersburg police received information from one of its secret agents that a band of Nihilists has started a printing office in a house at the corner of Mosehalska- ja strasse and Klinski Pereulok, near the church of the Jaeger regiment. By order of their superiors,the police gave the Nihilists plenty of rope, refrained from intefering and contented them- selves with keeping a strict watch over all that went in the hoase. For some time the conspirators merely distribut- ed pamphlets of the usual incendiary description, but last month the police learned they were planning a great Nihilist manifestation in St. Petersburg, Soon aiter a false proclamation from the Czar, addressed to the pessants, fell into the hands of the police. It was to have been publishedou Feb 19 (old style), the 25th anniversary of the
liberation of the earth, and ran thus: “My father, who now rests in God, | freed the peasants from the bonds of
slavery, but the nobles have annulled the work of the great Czar, Alexander IIL. Sharing my father’s love tor the people, | an: now kept a prisoner in my own palace by my nobles. To celebrate the liberation jubilee I gave the land to the peasants. Let them rise against the nobles aad march on St. Petersburg te free their Czar from imprisonment.” Hundreds of thousands of these pro- clamations were to have been dis tributed in the provinces in the hope of drawing a number of rural deputa- tions to St. Petersburg for facilitating the manifestation. The national jubilee whieh was in preparation was at once, by the Uzar’s orders, countermanded. The police ordered the arrest of the couspirators 10 days ago, Right agents, in various disguises, crept into the house. All the approaches were oc- cupied, while a strong detachment of troops was stationed behind the neigh- boring church ready for any emergency. An agent then rushed into the porter’s lodge shouting: “Come out and help me to tackle a drunkard at the corner vf the street."" The porter, a suspected Nibilist, innocently rushed out, leaving the entrance unguarded. The troops instantly surrounded the building. The police broke open the doors ot the priat- ing room, where they discovered 12 Nihilists, men and women, who made a desprate resistance, wounding eight of the agents before they were arrested. | After searching the room the police ar- rested a number of other suspects,among them Krugtoff the novelist, and Mme. Dubrowin, a well known contributor to Svet, the organ of Gen. Komaroff’s brother. The date oF the tria! is not yet fixed. _— . Weaknesses of Great Men.
