Mir. Mclutyre moved for correspondence having reference tothe prevention of taking inackerel by means of purse seins and gill nets within the territorial waters of Can- ada. He complained that the use of these devices had caused a dearth of mackerel, and that they re largely used by United States fishermen.

Mr. Flynn spoke in the same strain.

Hon. Mr. Tupper said the causes of com- plaint had come to his attention, and he in stituted an inquiry into the matter. it was worthy of remembrance, in this con- nection, that on one occasion before the in- troduction of purse seines, mackerel had disappeared, but that the next year they were present in large numbers.

Mr. Wilson, of Elgin, moved that the Franchise Act be repealed, and made a speech roundly abusing the measure.

Mr. Laurier spoke in support of the mo- tion, and declared that not one good word could be said for the act.

Sir Hector Langevin, who was leading the House in the absence of Sir John Mac- donald, made a vigorous defence of the act.

Mr. Patterson, of Brant, followed in support of Wilson's motion, and concluded at 6 o'clock, when the Speaker left the chair

After recess, private bills being in order, and none of the members in charge being prepared to proceed, the House adjourned without transacting any business.

Destroyed by Fire

Vancouver, B. C., Feb. 5.

The government reduction works were completely destroyed by fire this morning. Loss $25,000. The works were established in the centre of Cariboo mining district by the local government last summer, for the purpose of testing British Columbia ores, were completed in November, and the operations were very successful. Its de- struction by fire is a severe blow to the mining prospects.
