It had all looked very. very easy to Young I-footy. "I'll show him." he repeated to himself several times He flew up on the tall stub where his father had sat. For the first time in his short me he tried giving the hunting call. somehow it didnt sound an loud or go fierce or so frightening as the hootin: by his father had. As his father had done he instantly lesnea forward listening and ready to take off on his big wing; at the faintest. sound. There wasn't any sound. Not: a leaf riistied. N0 frightened Mouse squeaked. No startled bird twitter-l ed. The stillness was unbroken. Disappointed. Young Hooty straightened up. "Perhaps I didn't hoot. loud enough. Pretty soon I'll try again." thought he. so he waited a few minutes. then

A third time he hooted. Then he decided to try somewhere else. of course he should have done this in the first place. He flew quite a dis- tance until he found another likely place. There he tried again. This time when he listened he was sure he heard a sound, very faint. but still a sound. over by an old log on the ground a short distance away.

Instantly he flew over to hover just. above the old log while he. look- ed down for whoever had made that tiny sound. But he was in too much of a hurry; he went a little out the spot from which that sound had come. As he hovered in not quite the right place he had just a glimpse of a. fat Mouse darting into a hole in that old log. I-ie lighted on the log and vainly clawed at the edge of that hole. trying to tear it larger. All the time he snapped his bill in angry dlsappolmmem. which of course was foolish.

For a long time he sat still on that log hoping the Mouse would think he had gone away and come. out. The Mouse didnlt. and at last. Young I-footy gave up and flew off. He had found out that Hooty had spoken truly when he said that that which looks easy is often most. difficult.

West, feeling that the opponents were expecting a heart. lead. tried the surprise attack of the club king - not that this should have made imy different in the outcome. South took the first trick with the club ace, drew two rounds of trumps with the ace and king. then laid down the heart king. He cross- ed in dummy with it trump. dia- carded a club on the ace oi hearts and then led the diamond nine tothe atelipparentlv. South decid- ed that he would have to find the diamond queen right in order to fulfill the contract. and. as he ex- plained later to his partner. it had seemed a very good bet that West had the diamond queen. inasmuch as East's length in hearts and spades had marked him very short in the minor suits. so South tried the finesse to the diamond jack-and down he went.

South's knowledge of Eastls dis- tribution should have been put to better use! East. was indeed mark- ed with at least ten cards in the major suits. and thus. all South had to do was cash the A-K nl diamonds and the heart. ace and throw East. in with dummys last heart. discarding a loser from the closed hand. Then. even it the diamond queen had not dropped. East's forced heart return would give south the fulfilling trick.
