They have one prosecu- tor now in the field and if neceesary are prepared to give him an assistant.

Scott Act Meeting.

There was a large attendance of ladies and gentlemen at the Scott Act meeting in the Market Hall last night. The meeting was opened with prayer. Hon. David Laird occupied the chair and briefly introduced the speaker of the evening. Mr. F. S. Spence, of Toronto, Secretary of the Dominicn Alliance, who spoke for about an hour and a_ half. After expressing hs p'easure at seeing so many persons present, and at being privileged to address them at this particular juncture, Mr. Spence proceeded to the consideration otf what coustituted true temperance. Some persons think that the man who uses liquor in moderation—who can control his appetite— is the truly temperate man; and ethers that true temperance means total abstinence and prohibition. Afrer considering the first contention, avd il ustrating how those who gratify their appetites even in moderation are not practicing tiue temperance, he demon- strated by «xperiments the ivjurious effects of alcohol upon the human body. Proceed- ing he dweit upon the number, of crimes traceable to intemperance ia the different provinces of the Dominion, and gave figares t» show that ihe proportion was much greater in licens proviaces than it was in provinces either partially or wholly under prohibition, After some further remarks, to prove that the only true temperauce was total abstinence for the individual and prhibition for the state, and showing that the se ling of liquor was of no benefit to the country and cou!d not legitimately be culled a trade, he asked those present if they were going to vote for license; if they were going to put meney in theic pockets at the expense of the souls of their boys and girls. ‘here is no moral difference, said he, between the men who vote for license and the men who sell; both are re- sponsible. In conclusion he urged all to vote against the traffic on Thursday next;—in the interest of the community, and particularly in the interest of the boys and girls.

After prayer and “ God save the Queen,” the meeting adjourned,
