Louis Cardinals. who for two hec- tic weeks have been hanging on to the shirt. tails of Brooklyn Dodgers by at few frazzled threads. pounded out a 3-1 decision today over one troublesome Chicago Cubs in the first of a four-game series that may make or break their flag hopes.

They made only eight hits, but they were hard and tmely blows that left, the impression the Cards had come out of their woeful hit- ting slump.

Since the Dodgers-and all oth- er major league teams-wore idle today, the victory reduced Brook- lylns lead to half a game and s owed the shaky Cards another step along the rccky home stretch.
