The Presbyterian Church in Canada

The General Assembly of the Presby- terian Church tn Canada wil! be in session in Montreal during next week. Between tiree and four hundred Commissioners will be present. In the opinion ef the Montreal Witness the mantle of the Moderator will probably fall upon the shouliersa of the Rev. Principal McKnight, D. D., of Hali- fax, who has been nominated for the office by the College of ex-Moderators, and who is well known by mavy readers of Tue Examiner. Some idea of the position, the wéalth, the power and spreading use- fulness of this church may be gathered from the following statistics, culled from last year’s oflicial documents : There are about 726 members, an increase of thirty. E!ders, about 4,466. Pastoral charges 826, an increase of eighty for the year. These charges embrace about 1,687 preaching sta- tions. There ts sitting accommedation in the churches for 369,036 persons: an increase of 27,304 for the year. Number of families belonging to the body, 65,833, an increase of 1,538, and the number of communicants 1s 118,330, an increase of 1,823 (net.) There are about ninety-five thousand scholars in the Sabbath schouls, some five thousand of whom are in churc!: com- munion. The tetal moneys raised throngh- out the Church for all purposes were about one million tive hundred thousand dollars. This large sum was given for the support of colleges, church ordinances and missions at home and abroad.

Marriage With Deceased Wife's Sister.

—In Great Britaiv,the deceased wife's sister question is not going to be allowed to sleep. The Earl of Dalhousie ap |pareatly takes charge of the matter in the House of Lords, as the following circular lately issued. shows :—

‘$My Dear Lorp,—Il venture to hope that you may be in favor of amending the | law which at present forbids marriage with the sister of a deceased wife, and as I pro- pose to move the second reading on Thurs- day, the 11th June, for the removal of that restriction, I take the liberty of asking you | to be so good as ty be in your place on that | day in order to give it your support. In the year 1883, when the Bill was last before the House, it passed the second reading by 165 to 158, but was rejected on the third reading by 145 to 140, The division on the Bill this year will probably be equally close, and every vote is, there- fore, of the utmost importance. In recent years the division has generally boen taken before 7.30 p. m.; but as itis possible the opponents of the Bill may debate it at some length, I trust you will kindly make arrangemeats so as to remain in the House until the division is taken, however late that may be, and that you will not be induced to pair. Railway Matters.

Sir Henry Tyler is inspecting the Grand Trank Railway, of which he is President. ’n the Sed inst., in an interview with a reporter for the Quebee Morning Chroniele, Sir Henry said that outside of his general inspection of the company’s property, one ofthe main objects of his visit was to en- deaver to secure some understanding with American trunk lines respecting rates of freight, which had latterly beeu ruinons to al! concerned. He desired to see an end put to the present mad war of rates, but without the imposition of an exorbitant increase He has already expressed himself in au interview with a recorer of the New York Herald, in favor of the pooling sys tem, and considered the system of poolng an admirable one if the parties to the pool will only do what is honest and right and carry out their agreements, which, unfor- tunately, -they latterly have not done. On the contrary, by carrying traftic at little above or sometimes below the cost of conveyance they have simply thrown $125,009,000 into the sea. Tha original idea of the pool system was not to exact exorbitant rates, but to secure a moderate profit in the conveyance of traffic and to arrange such a tariff as should be fair to the

public and per:ancnt in the charges levied. The system was rfist started to give rates which would be as fair

tothe public as they were to the stock- holders. It is not in the interest either of the public or of the railroad companies that those continnal disturbances of rates go on.

The Trial of Riel.

Tne Ottawa correspondent of the Montreal Gazette says that *‘ the trial of Riel will occur during the present month, aud at as early a date as the collection of evidence will permit. As already made known,the Counsel for the Government will be Meosrs. Robinson and Osler, of Toronto, and within the next ten days Mr, Buar- bridge, the Deputy Minister of Justice, will proceed to Regina, where the trial will take place, to watch the case on behalf of the Government. Riel will be tried be- fore Stipendiary Magistrate Richardson, of Regina, by a jury of six, one-half French and one-half English. The evidence will be overwhelming ia proof of his guilt, and it is to be hoped the verdict will be in ac- cordance with the known facts.
