Candy Cane for a Toonie Fundraiser

During the week of November 28 - December 2, 2005 there will be a “Candy Cane for a Toonie” fundraiser in the concourse area of the W.A. Murphy Student Centre to raise money for the UPEI & Charlottetown Food Banks.

Three Millennium Scholarships for UPEI Students

The Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation has awarded in-course scholarships to three UPEI students. Third-year arts student Christopher Gillis and third-year business student Ryan Palmer received second-level renewable scholarships valued at $8,000 over two years. The Foundation awarded a first-level renewable scholarship, valued at $10,000 over two years, to Colin MacDonald who is a third-year arts student. Only 100 first-level awards are handed out across Canada. The award-winners were selected based on academic achievement, community service, leadership and interest in innovation. Created by the federal government, the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation is committed to providing opportunities for Canadians to learn, grow, and contribute to their communities.

Many Construction Projects to be complete for New Year

As the fall term is coming to an end and we add the finishing touches to papers, some other things on campus are also finishing up and preparing for the New Year.

As I’m sure you’re all aware, a number of construction projects have been popping up all over campus. From the renovation of the Cass building, the creation of a new facility for Campus Kids and of course the New Residence.

For those who don’t know, The Cass building is being renovated now to move their existing computer lab to the main floor, where the Engineering lounge had been. When speaking to Tyler Callaghan, a 2" year Engineer student, about what he thought of the change, he said “It’s not too bad, we’re using this room [the old computer room] right now fora lounge.” This renovation project is expected to be done in the near future, but no exact date was given. There have also been discussions about future changes that may occur for the Cass building, but none are finalized as of yet.

Another project, Campus Kid’s new daycare, is now practically completed, even though the project only started this term.

This new facility has many improvements, which were “all designed with the kids in mind,” says Lynn Hogan, Director and Owner of Campus Kids. “The rooms are scaled down for the children and there will be no more room sharing between age groups.”

The facility also has a research lounge for education and psychology students, who benefit from having children on campus. There are now observation windows, including 2 one- way windows, which allow students to

observe the children, yet not interrupt them, while working on projects and research.

When asked about the difference between the new facilities versus the old, Lynn said, “It’s just like night and day. We had the opportunity and wanted to make the most of it.”

And of course, who could forget the New Residence? It’s been a curious, and sometimes frustrating topic, for anyone who was supposed to move in this term, and many are wondering if it will actually be completed by January.

Well as it stands now, the New Residence will be finished by mid- December, assuming that there are no more problems during the next 2-3 weeks. Some people have even had the opportunity to take a tour of the building, including some of the Resident Life Advisors from the other Residences.

This means that, with the assumption that things run smoothly here on out, plans to move in residents in January will be going ahead, and things can go back to normal, well relative normal at least, for current on campus residents.

Song Writer’s Circle

An evening for songwriters and musicians to get together and share songs, stories,laughs, get some feedback and just to have a good time.

FANS Breakfast

The Family and Nutritional Science Society (FANS) raised over $360 for their local Christmas families in need during their pancake breakfast on November 10th. Many thanks to the sponsors: Cora’s, Smitty’s, Purity Dairy, and Chartwell’s.

I have lost a blue pencil case with a black bottom and ‘Jaguar’ tag including items such as a 128MB jump drive, a mini cassette recorder, stapler, various pens and other writing implements, and most importantly a metal pencil sharpener of sentimental value to me. I believe it was left in Lec theatre A in the Atlantic Veterinary College on Wednesday 2 weeks ago but it is not in any of the lost and found areas. If any one has picked it up please stick it in Susan Hunter’s mailbox on the 2nd floor (Class of 2007) of AVC or even just returning the pencil sharpener that was in it would mean a lot.
