“MARINER” ANSWERED,

Sir,—In looking over the last Examiner I see a tirade on the Grand River tavy service over the signature of “‘Mariner.”’ The very fact that one who pretends to have the interest of the place at heart does not give what he pretends to be facts ovei his own name is sufficient proof that they are false. He charges me with the same crime that Sir Robert Walpole charged William Pitt with, that of being young. Ia his crusty brain he seems to think thats young man should not be allowed to earn his living. But I can inform him that the people of Annandale have before now given me positions of (not with his consent) trust both in church and state. Besides ail this I have tor one of my sureties a man who has been surety for the three prévious buoy masters and another of my surities iz the oldest pilot on the River, 8 man who pijoted ships and’ vessela in thie river befcre “Mariager’ opened his eyes to behold the blue skys of the Maritime Provinces. I would also inform him that it was this man who buoyed and staked tne river this year ac- cording to the instructions of the harbor master, and if “Mariner” bas any ships he is uneasy about, wind and tide permit- tiog, he will pilot them to their destination free of charge. Now as to the buoys used. The bar buoy and inside buoys were made according to plans furnished to Mr. John Swaitow. The present bar buoy has served that purpo- e for seveu years, the other buoys for shorter periods of time. But they are al] the same as those used by pre- vious contractors. Now, “Mariner” I can bring the teetimony of the Captain of t he only vessel at preseat sailing out of this barbor that the river is buoyed aod staked better than it bas been for yeare.

I can bring the testi- mony of the best pilot out of Georgetown tothe same effect. And it seems evident that you must have bad
