Miss Haz» has, for some years, devoted herself to pious and charitable work. She founded and liberally endowed the Mission Church of st. John Baptist, with whose assistance the Dioceasan Synod has endeavored ia various ways to wrestle. Miss Hazen is a deughter of thelate R. F. Hazen, Esq., of this city, and has many warm friends in this Province.

ConTrRaAry to all expectations, David Both- well, who disappeared from his home in Sugary Settlement, Northumberland, N. B., four weeks ago, was found alive about half a mile from his house, on the 4th inst. When discovered he was crawling through the bushes on his hands and knees, and had a half devoured rabbit and a bottle of water with him. He was quite unable to give an account of himself, and it is still a mystery how he kept himself alive in the woods all the time he has been missing.

THe five mile single scull race on Lake Sebago, on the 7th inst., near Portland, Me., between Teemer and Conley for $1,000 a side won by the former, in thirty-four minutes, ten seconds. Teemer secured the lead in the first quarter of a mile, which he maintained to the finish, being at one time six lengths ahead of Conley. Conley spurted well on the last quarter and came in a little over a length, or two and a half seconds behind Teemer. Teemer was the favorite in betting by odds to one. THE summit steamboat express of the Ulster & Delaware road had a narrow escape from disaster. After leaving Kingston, N. Y., on the night of the 7th, on rounding the curve, the engineer saw a mass of rocks partly covering the track. He applied the air brakes and pulled the reverse lever over and opened the throttle wide, stopping the train in less than its length, bat not before the rocks had stripped off all the steps from the left side of the train and broken every cast iron journal box away from every truck from the engine to the rear of the train. The trucks, however, were not dislodged. ‘There were several hundred business men on the train. A vote of thanks was given to the engineer.

Lieut, Gorpdon, deputy superintendent of the Canadian meteorological service, has left Ottawa for Halifax to make the finai prepara- tions for embarkiog with a corps of observers for the Hudson Bay expedition, The expedition, with the crew and_ the explorers, will: number fifty-five men. Professor Bell will accompany the ex- pedition as geologist. No other scientific men will be on board excepting such as are required for the observing stations. Six sta- tions in the Straits are to be established, which will be supplied with provisions to last until a year at least from next autumn, when, should further observations be considered un- necessary, the observers will return home.

Madame Auguste Robert, of Montreal, whose recent success in Paris as a singer nas electrified Parisian society, will return home at the end of the present month in company with the distinguished tutor, Madame la Baronne de Carvia. During her brief training she has so cultivated her voice as to already enjoy a great reputa- tion. Many of her enthusiastic friends are so delighted at her success that they urge her to follow in the footsteps of Albami, assuring her a brilliant career. She, how- ever, is loth to take their advice, and will probably remain in Montreal. Paris- Canada, the organ of the Canadians in Paris, speaks of her recent performances in the French capital in the most eulogistic terms. Her voice is described as sweet and powerful. On the occasion of her debut, her voice filled the Albert-le-Grand hall. Madame Robert is a daughter of J. B. La- belle, merchant of St. Catherine street. At an early age she gave evidence of possessing a voice, which art has improved in no small
