<u1e News.—The clipper schooner Elisha Crowell, fifty hours from Broad Cove, west coast of Newfoundland, with a cargo of canned lobsters to the Hon. D. Davies, arrived in port jast evening. Captain Butler reports light fair winds on the passage up. The wea- ther had been very stormy at Port au Port for the fortnight before he sailed. The E. Cro well will sail for Port au Port, via Murray Harbor, on Thursday morning next, to bring Mr. Cairns and his fishing crew home for the winter.

" Asour Horses.—The Poineer says: Six horses were taken across by the steamer last Saturday morning, besides several of the trot- ters who weer at the Charlotteown races, Mr. Beverly of St. John, while at the provincial exhibition bought a fine Ham- bletonian mare from Mr. William Ross of New London for $150, also her suckling fill sired by Westlawn, for $100. They were taken over in the St. Lawrence last Saturday morning. We learn, too, that Mr. James McLeod of this town, refused an offer of $160 from Mr. Traverse of Rothsay, near St. John, for a year and a nalf colt by the same sire.

PECULIARITIES OF THE Season.— This season is certainly prolific to nature. Some sprigs of strawberry bushes plucked by Mrs. Hugh J. Massey, were left at the Pioneer office one day last week, with the second crop of ripe berries hang- ing from the sprays. A bunch of butter- cups in full bloom were picked at Moncton, on Friday last. Alimbof a crab apple tree, from the garden of Mr. Daniel Hen- nigar, of Noel, Hants Co., mi B.< has on one side full grown fruit, and ea the other side full blown blossoms. On almost any put of the tree the same curious freak may be observed.

People flocked to the police station and stood in crowds about the streets discussing the question. While it was the unanimous op‘nion that some strong evidence of McDonald’s guilt had been secured, no one could say what the nature of that evidence was. The police officially were ignorant of what evi- dence had been secured against McDonald, is Solicitar-General Pugsley simply told Chief Marshal to have McDonald arrested, and after a slight hesitation Inspector Weatherhead and Detective Ring were | ordered to proceed to Barker’s shop and | bring the accused to the station. Me- Donald did not want so go at first, but when told by Ring that he could walk a few steps ahead of the officers he consented to go.

At the store McDonell was searched, but nothing beyond some paper with short- hand characters on it were found. Steno- grapher Frye was sent for and this paper was placed in his hands to decipher.

Coroner Berryman and Solicitor-Gen- eral Pugsley were both interviewed by your corresondent, but they declined to say a word as to the nature of the evi- dence. The Solicitor-General, however, said that the arrest was made on informa- tion believed to be strong, but, in the in- terest of justice, it was not advisable to let the public know tne nature of it.

After the arrest detective Ring visited Barker's wholesale establishment, and found boxes corresponding exactly to the ones in which the candy was sent. They were used for fine-tooth combs, and a quantity of these were found which looked as if they had been emptied out of their regular boxes.

McDonald was for some time in the asy- lum, but was discharged as cured in May last. He was, about a year ago, employed as private secretary to O’Shaugnessy, as- sistant general, manager of the C. P. R., in Montreal, and was in some part of (luebec or Ontario during the Galt poisoned candy cases.

C. A. Stockton has been engaged to de- fend McDonald, and no reporter is allowed to even speak to him. McDonald is a brother of Mrs. Barker, widow of the late Mayor Barker, of St. John.
