When to Avoid Candy.

An exchange says: Sugar is one of the best of the fat-producing foods, and tor that reason is bad for a person young or old, in whom there is atend ency to accumulate too much fat. The converse ef this is true—it is a vaiuable food for those who are weak, who suffer from a lack of animal heat and who need building up. Not too much of it, though, because there are elements needed in the body which sugar will not satisfy. Sugar is exceed- ingly satisfying to the appetite. I know aman who was an_ officer ot cavalry during the civil war, and on one occasion during a raid he found an opportunity to fill his haversack and both saddlebags with brown sugar. The men of his command did the same. It was four days before they were able to get a supply of rations, and during that time they lived on the sugar and were perfectly contented with the diet. This story points to one rulewhich may be safely laid down for all. Candy should not be eaten immediately before meals by either child or adults, because it will destroy the appetite for foods, and that other should be taken first , because of the food element found in it and which is not found in candy. In other words the supply of sugar should be adjusted to that of other toods in a natural and common-sense way proportion.

Werry and Indigestion.

It is so remarkably easy to offer the advice to persons whose lot is not al- together cast in pleasant places, and with whom things do not go well, to retrain from worrying, but how hard it is to follew this well-meaning advice! None the less, worry isa fruitful source of many of the ills that flesh is heir to. It imprints lines 0a the face and seams it with furrows, and has a most depress- ing effect upon the stomach. The worry and anxiety which depress the brain produce a semi-paralysis of the nerves of the stomach, and the result is indigestion. Indigestion is a terrible enemy to temper, and this affects our happiness, and, of course, the health for this affects our appearance. One unmistakable sign of mental health is serenity of temper anda self--control that enables us to bear with equanimity and unruffled temper the trials and troubles of life, more particularly those arising from contact with scolding, irri- tating and irritable people— American Journal of Health,

Table Centers.

Table centers are requisite to the modern table and are used at all meals. They may be square, rectangular, oval or round ; but the size and shape of the center-piece sheuld accord with the size of the table upon which it is used, a long table set with many covers de- manding a rectangular piece for the center. These pieces admit of more elaboration than any other accessory used in the dining room. ‘The color- ing, however, should be quiet and never obtrusive, else any elegance is impossible. Simple center-pieces are not without their admirers, and the hemstitched pieces finished wih a ruffi- ing of Valenciennes or a scroll design outlined with feather stitching in heavy Roman floss make most attractive table peices. When the table is laid with- out a cloth the center-piece is always used.— Delineator.
