Antonio Bernhardt Austrian, was sentenced to two months imprisonment for stealing a pants and vest

We have received from J. F. Campion, Esq., of Souris, a letter asking us to say whether or not he is the author of the ‘* Five Mutes’ Article,” which appeared in our issue of the 30th ult. We have only to say, in reply, that the article in question was inthe handwriting of Mr. Campion, that he supplied it, and requested us to publish it. We may, however, add that we have since learned that Mr. Campion was not its author.

Mr. Dantet Davies is not, in any sense, a vain man, if his speech at the Athenceum last evening can be taken as a criterion. In vindicating the matter of dumbness on the part of our representatives, he said that it should be remembered the House of Com- mons was composed of 206 members, some of them very able men; therefore, if our men attempted to speak, they would have made fools of themselves, and been actually skinned. Mr. Davies having been a repre- senstative for the past five years pronounc: 8 his own condemnation.

Mr. John McDonald, of Centre Toronto, the Grit candidate, in a speech published in the Globe, has the following :—

‘Free Trade with the United States meant to-day the extinguishment of all the capital invested by every manufacturer in this country. Everything else being equal, undoubtedly free trade might have its at- traction ; but to talk of a young people like us entering into free trade with a peo- ple like those of the United States, was simply to talk nonsense. We would have just about the same chance as a little boy would have in fighting with a bully. This country was not in a position to enter into free trade relations with the United States

the idea was simply preposterous.”

Ar a late hour on Monday night, a sailor named MeDonald took lodgingson board the schooner ‘*‘ Ocean Wave.” He _ had been drinking during the night ; and, after re- tiring, slept soundly. On awakeing in the morning, he found himself minus a watch, chain, and $80 cash. He made complaint at the Police Station, and oflicers Cameron and Hennessy immediately searched the vessel. After they arrived, a Maltese sail- or produced the missing watch and cash, amounting to $7. The Maltese, whose name is Joseph Monteno Da Salva, was ar- rested and tried before the Stipendiary Magistrate this ferenoon. The evidence of a young negro, named Gairo, who went on board with the Maltese on Monday night, shows that he (the Maltese) went into the eabin “where McDonald was sleeping; that when he returned he showed the watch to the negro, and afterwards hid it. Their was no proof of his stealing the money. He was sentenced to four months’ imprison- ment with hard labor.

The can- didates for this county are reported to be Hon. Dr. Fortin, Conservative, and Mr. Tremblay, Liberal. _ An American schooner called the Rival is reported on shore at Byron Island with mackerel. No further particulars received. Mempuis, Tenn., Sept. 9.

The condition of the city grows more desperate every hour. Whole tamilies are stricken down in a few hours, and the call for nurses is greater than can be supplied. Yesterday there were about 100 deaths and 300 new cases; and to-day, up to noon, 7 deaths are reported. The death rate to- day will probably exceed any previous day. Of new cases it is useless to longer keep count.

BELGRADE, Sept. 9.

Turkish troops continue to arrive from Salonica at Metrovitza and Novi Bazar, and it is estimated that 60,000 regular troops and insurgents are encamped at those places. ‘The insurgents in the north- east ot Bosnia are estimated at 50,000, in- cluding 15,000 Redifs and Nizams.

In the speech from the throne at the opening of the Reichstag to-day, the Em- peror expressed the hope that the anti-So- cialist Bill would be adopted, that the spread of the Socialist movement would be arrested, and that those who have been misled by it may be brought back to the right path. A letter from Drisco, Davis Strait, dated 12th of July, says that no one vessel of the whaling fleet had caught a single fish, and it was expected that the season would prove acomplete failure. No vessel has been able to pass through Melville Bay, which is unprecedented.
