Council Update

PRESIDENT:

Brandon would like to thank Mike Read and Computer Services who helped make the Online Election process a successful reality on cam- pus. The past by-election had a record turnout of 79 voters - the highest in UPEISU history. Congratulations are extended to all successful candidates in the election.

A meeting was held on the 23rd with Minister of Education Chester Gillan where he provided councillors with first hand knowledge of his position on a number of impor- tant issues. This was extremely effec- tive as it aided the relationship between the SU and the Minister.

VP FINANCE:

Hiring Board is in the process of hiring a number of new students to fill positions in the Student Union.

A increase in the number of students attending UPEI has helped the SU with some budget concerns.

EXEC VB:

AIDS PEI is interested in holding its annual cut-a-thon on.cam- pus in November so watch out for the opportunity to get your hair cut by a professional for a reasonable price while support a good cause.

The Campus Confidential sur- vey was sent away to MacLean's so watch for that in the Universities issue of the magazine.

VP ACTIVITIES:

The foam party was a rousing success and another party is in the works for next semester.

The Sociology/Anthropology Society has started up again and held 4 potluck on Friday Oct 3rd

ment has begun a movie series. These movies are free and show on Thursday evenings at 7pm in KCI 104

UPEI Spanish Club Tertulia has begun meetings

MAPUS ; MAPUS would like to invite everyone to visit their new website at Www.upei.ca/mapus Liz Senter has taken over the position of Vice President _ MAPUS will be accepting donations for the food bank located on campus and also Subway Stamps that will be given to food bank recipients - donations can be dropped off at the MAPUS office in the basement of Main Monday to Friday from 10-2

Know Your Student Services Staff

under the bridge since I last roamed the campus in the seventies as an undergrad and it sure feels good to be returning home. Both the campus and I have experienced a similar metamorphosis. The campus has expanded proportional to my waste size with the addition of the Wanda Wyatt Dining Hall, Young Sports Centre, the W A Murphy Student Centre, KC Irving Chemistry building, AVC and the Aquatic/Rink Complex. Similarly the loss of my hair and hip reflect the loss of two deal old friends, the Alumni Gym and The Barn. What great times and fond memories I have of those two gathering spots.

In the seventies UPEI struggled with its identity as a new entity evolved from the proud and steep traditions of two fine universities. Today UPEI takes its rightful place as a "Great Small University" attracting prestigious

national recognition for its commitment to quality teaching. . After 27 years of working in the

. Public School System, from elementary

to high school settings it's a privilege to have exposure to the university system and I can tell you, I like what I see so far. Faculty and Staffs' accessibility and commitment to serving students is most impressive. As Counsellor in Student Services I am impressed with the quality and diversity of services available to our students.

As a student here "back in the day" I regret I did not take advantage of the valuable services available to all stu- dents. Its my early observation that there are many present day students in the same boat and I thought it might be of some benefit to give a thumb nail sketch of the various services available through Student Services.

We are presently taking a look at signage to direct everyone to the sec- ond floor, North end of th W A Murphy Student Center. The easiest way to find us is take the elevator or stairwell oppo- site the Bookstore. The Women's Center and Medical Center are located here as - well as Student Services.

Shirley Hudson and I provide personal and academic counselling. Shirley has been a tremendous support to me as I climb a steep learning curve in the academic counselling area. Besides counselling there are quality professionals delivering service in a number of areas. Joy Ikede coordinates services to our International students.

Mamdouh Elgharib delivers career counselling services including a campus wide tutoring program. If you are inter- ested in registering as a tutor ($11.50/hr) or need a tutor, pop in to see Mamdouh.

Joanne McCabe coordinates services for students with disabilities. Together with Paul Campbell and stu- dent assistants, Joanne arranges aca- demic and test/exam accommodations for students. If you are diagnosed with a disability you may qualify for a disabili- ties study grant to help you with your studies.

Jeni Mutch and Cynthia Shoemaker deliver the ACE Program for special needs students. Tamara Leary coordinates the Student Success Program for students referred by the respective Deans for additional academ- ic support. Joy Livingston-Ford is here on a part-time basis to help Student Loan inquiries. Bob Gibson is our Director who has demonstrated patience and support as the new Counsellor gets his feet under him. Patsy Myers is Administrative Assistant and together with student assistants will greet you warmly as you enter the office.

The mandate of Student Services is to provide quality profession- al services to the students of UPEI and I invite you to take full advantage of this. I'm confident you'll find it to be a rewarding experience.
