Next morning Mr. Aspin was in Paris. There the devil in him revived to some extent. He determined to spend a couple of daysin the ‘City of Pleasure,” and to havea spree. Had not the man- ager promised to throw every one off the scent?

Meantime the manager strolled down to Scotland Yard. There he gave his reasons for believing that a theft of valu- able bonds had taken place. It was im-

ible to say how and by whom they been abstracted. He desired that an able detective should return with him to the city, to make an investigation and oe his advice. The request was prompt- complied with.

Shortly before 3 o'clock the manager entered the bank, accompanied by two detectives from the Criminal Investi- — Department—namely, Inspector

srump, and an officer in plain clothes. they were met by the cashier with the significant announcement that young Mr. Aspin had not returned after his dinner hour.

“There can be no doubt,” added Mr. Price ‘‘ that our suspicions of him were well founded.”

The manager and chief detective retir- éd to the sanctum of the former. Mr. Price and the second officer were asked to hold themselves in readiness for a summons to join them.

The circumstances already entailed in the conversation between the Manager and the cashier were forthwith com- municated to the Inspector. The man- ager, moreover, opened thesafe, and de- scribed how the various parcels of bonds brought from the strong room had been laid in a row on the middle shelf: and how he had perceived, immediately after Mr. Aspin had left the room, a gap in the row where Messrs. Bulling & Co.’s script had been laid. The inspector was then requested to make a careful survey of the room and its contents.

While he was doing this, the manager deftly slipped a paper from his pocket into the leaves of a ledger within the safe, much in the same manner, it will be remembered, as he had acted with an- other packet. Having done this, he “swung to” the door, which fastened with a snap.

During this operation, Inspector Crump was looking in the opposite direc- tion. But he was doing so to some pur- pose; for he saw the movements of the manager clearly reflected in the ground

The detective next interviewed the cashier, whose story confirmed that of his superior officer.

Now the duty of the detective was clear. Even if there remained a doubt as to Mr. Aspin’s guilt, it was absolutely necessary to discover what had become of that young gentleman. Inquiry was therefore made of his colleagues in the office; but no one could offer a clue to the missing clerk’s movements.

From the fact of his taking two tickets, it is presumed that he is travelling in com- pany with a female, possibly an accom- plice. He paid Messrs. Gaze with a fifty-pound note, of which I have taken the number. The question is, where did he get the fifty-pound note? Can you tell me?”

At first the manager made no reply, and he averted his eyes under the steady but seemingly frank regard of the de- tective. Then, laboring under evident excitement, he stepped over to the safe, opened it, drew outa little drawer with- in, and exclaimed!

“Good heavens, that’s gone, too!”

*‘What do you mean, sir?”

“I had a fifty-pound note in this drawer.” He referred to his pocket- book for the number and read it out. The detective smiled as he announced that his figures werethe same. The di- rectors looked at one another meaning- ly, being full of sympathy for their head official
