Beside the Point.

IN trying to fasten a charge of untruth- | fulness upoo Tue Examiner, the Patriot | has missed the point. It isa fact that the interest on the school debentures was due on the first day of May. It is a fact that the money was not forthcoming when the coupons were presented. It is a fact that the movey might just as well have been provided on the first day of May as several days afierwards; and that it was not then provided is a fact not creditable to those who menage the dinances of the city.

One of the chief difficulties in way of doing business in Charlottetown, has been the dilatoriness of busivess men— | leading business men—in meeting their | bills. It has been their habit to put off} payments (on some mere pretence) which | ought to have beeu and might easily | have been made promptly; and the con- sequence has been anvoyiug, harrassing, aod in some cases disastrous to their customers. This vicious habit is, we are pleased to note, being broken. Many of our business men vow pay their bil s

with reasovable despatch; and _ it is rather too bad that our ~‘Cor- poration should, not only lower its credit unuecessarily, but set the bad | example of waut of promptitude to | citizeus whom it is most desirable to | train to the habit of paying their |

accounts when due. The Civic authori- | ties and the Local Goverument have no | excuse for putting off the payment of bills that are honestly owing by them.

Where do our Hopes Lie?

In the course of a recent speech, Mr. W. H. Kerr, Q C., of Moutreal, pointed out the danger to the Nationality in too much friction between Dominion and Local authorities, and said : —‘*Our hopes for national greatness must centre iv the Dominion, and we should not waste our eucrgies on what are, after all, but large muuicipal ceuncils.”

Under the present arrangement, the mad people are ‘farmed out” to contraciors, and “the asylum inspectors cannot insist upon the carrying out of any of their suggestions for amelioration with- out the interference of three special commissioners, one appointed by th Goverument, another by the proprietors, and the third by the two commissiovers. ” This arrangement doesn’t work well.

Mr. Bennet, of England, shorily coming to the United States to engage in stock farming, ought to be well suited fer his future vocation. His father, the Earl of Tankerville, is one of the foremost cattle breed=-s in Euglaud and is the owner of the famous

White Bulls of Tankerville. This herd

are said to be the sole survivors of the original wild cattle of Evgland. Every

One is: They wiil agree to place at Quirk’s Well, Prince Street, a powrrtul steam pump, which will be capable of easily | isplacing four one-eight streams seventy feet high. ‘They will also lay ten thousand of six and eight-inch cast iron pipe 1n | the different streets, which will have effect | in case of fire of carrying water to) the principle parts of the city. Mr. W. Perry, jr., who represents the | firm of R. H. Buchanan & Co., informs us| that if the City Couacil is willing to give the amount above-named— $2,500 per an- num—they will carry out the proposed agreement to furnish a complete system of wateworks in Charlottetown to the letter. Mr. Perry, like ail strangers, expresses his surprise that a city like Chariottetown—a wooden city—is so far behind in the important matter of water- works, He thinks that our engines are ex- ternally god, but internally bad; and that Silsby, with her builer, is unsafe to be near while at work. Rollo is safe, he says, but it takes too long to get steam on her. This being the case, the results may be serious in the near future, and the City Council |

may be condemned for neglect in not having the engines in efficient working | order,

The system of waterworks proposed by Mesers. R. H. Buchanan & Co. is cheap, and we hope it will be well considered by our cit zens.

We learn that a meeting will be held on Tuesday or Wednesday next to consider the maiter.

Supreme Court.

THe Supreme Court met this forenoon— all the Judges being present—and deliver- ed judgment in the following cases:—

John G. Scrimgeour vs. Owen Connolly —The rule was made absolute for sitting aside the verdict and granting a new trial,

Alex. McKenzie vs the Queen Insurance Company— The verdict of the Jury was con- | firmed, and the rule for a new trial dis- charged with costs to be paid hy the Com- pany, Chief Justice dissenting.

In the application of W. G. Strong, High Sheriff of Prince County, in a case ip which Theophilus J. Clarke was plaintiff and Gilbert Bell was defendant, for an interpleader order to try the right of Solo- mon J. Wright, a claimant under a bill of sa'e, the Court decided that the claimant was entitled, under his mortgage and bill of sale, to the personal property seized by the Sheriff, and was, therefore, entitled to the money levied by the Sheriff and paid into Court. The costs to be paid by Clarke.

In the case of Mary Ann Fraser vs. P. E. Island Steam Navigation Company—This was a cace in demurrer by the ds fendant to the plaintiff's declaration. The object of the demurrer was to show that the Com- pany owning the wharf on which the plaintiff was injured, was not liable for damages in case the wharf was not in a state of repair. The judgment of the Court was, in eff ct, that they were liable.

Liquidators of the Bank of P. E. Island vs. John logs.—As we yo to press, Judge Peters is delivering a Jengthy decision in this case.

The hearing of the argument to set aside the compromise made between the Liqui- dators and the Directors of the Bank of P. K. Island has been still further postponed.
