FARM NOTES.

Potatves. ~The sooner they are dug now the better. It is best to keep them a while either in protected heaps in the field, or on some unuxed floor. They threw ef much moisture within a few days, and will heat if in large heaps er teo deep in the bins. When theroughly dry, they may be placed in seeure pits er in the cellar. Petatoes are injured at once by frest, and gradually by san- light, or even by diffused light. They should, therefore, be kept from the light as much as possible, and decayed ones carefully culled out before they are put away.

rewth. moderately warm days and cold nights seem to have a great eifect upen them. As the time fer heavy frosts approaches, secure the -mangles and sngar-beets. Top by rubbing the leaves off, not by cutting, as the weund often starts decay, which spoils the beet. Carrots secure attention next after the beets, aud turnips next, leay- ing the Swedish turnips lengest. Al- ways protect piles of roots against frost by seme covering. ‘Turnips will survive severe freezing, but they are never se geod for feeding.

Plowing for Spring crops.—This may be done at any time now, where the soil is not teo light, and not likely to wash during the wieter. The ground should he left rough to be subjected te the fallest action of the weather, freeze ing, thawiag, wetting, drying, ets. Should « crep of weeds come up, it will very likely pay to harrow and plew again.

Ne wel! should be dug at a less dis- taace than 300 feet from a barnsyard, cesspoe!, or privy vault.

Action of Lime on the Soil.—Lime, as it comes from the kiln, is known as caustic or quick lime,—theheat having expelled the carbonic acid gas of the earbonaie of lime or lime stene. Upon exposure to the airand meisture this caustic lime absorbs water aad carbenic acid gas, and again returas to the car- bonaie. During the revision it decom~ peses vegetable matter and svts the elemonts of plant food free, It is in this power to prepare feod tor the grow- ing crop from the vegetable matter in the soil that the ehief value ot lime resides. The greater the per cent of the limo that is im the caustic state, the more viluable itis fer this werk. The quicker the lime can be applied after burning tie better.

Plant Econoniy.—P \ants,like animals, ean live on inferior feed, bnt where it is abundant will select the best. Where food is lacking in quantity plants will contract their growth and devote al! the food that is possible te the production ef the offspring—the seed. It isa well- known fact that anything which checks the growth of the plant tends to make it flower first, and if possible produce seod. It seems as if the plant realizes that its own life is in danger and takes the shortest eut to the reproduction of its kind ; amdin so deing eften piaches itself and is very ecenemical for the sake @: future generations.

Cemposting is the art of mixing ers ganic matter,such as straw, muck, dead auimuls, ete, that must undergo dee sompositien before they become avail- able as plant feod, with organic matter that will absorb and retain the veges table gasses that the organic matter would otherwise let pass into the air and thus be lost. Such a mixture must be kept moist, but not exposed to rains that would wash away the valuable solublesalts. Stable manure and muck make an excellent basis for a compost heap, with which ashes, leached and fresh lime, weeds (not in seed), waste matters, etc., can be mixed.
