On the 8th of June last, the Secretary of the Board of Trade received the following letier from the Deputy Minister of Marine and Fisheries :

Orrawa, 7th June, L880.

My Dear Str,—Mr. Plimsoll has telegraph- ed to the Minister of Marine t’iat he thinks it would be advisable that the Port Warden of Montreal should give his evidence before the conimittee of the House of Commons in Lon- don, which is now sitting taking evidence relutive to the loading ef vessels with grain in bulk ; and the Board of Trade in Loudon also think it desirable that your Port Warden should give evidence as to the practical work- ing of our Act at Montreal and the mode of stowing grain cargoes.

\While Mr. Plimsoll is quite willing and anxious that Canada should be exempted from the operation of the proposed vew Bill, it is quite possible that there might be some oppo- sition to such eXxe:nption, and it is very neces- sary that every precaution should be taken in the interests of the trade of the St. Lawrence, ami at the expense of the Port Wardens’ funds, which I believe are quite ample for the purpose’ I[fsuch should be the case, of which Ihave no doubt, would you kindly in- form me whether the Port Warden could leave by the next Saturday’s mail boat from (Juebec ”

A special meeting of the Council of the Board of Trade was at once called, to which this letter was referred, and the ditfieulty of sending the Pert Warden te England during this season of the year wis so apparent that the Council resolved, if possible, to meet the difficulty by having the evidence taken in this country. <Ac- cerdingly, the following letter was ad- dressed, by the instructiens of the Council, to the Department at Ottawa :

Dear Sir,—l hastea to say that your letter of yesterday ve sending our Port Warden to give evidence before the Parliaiaentary com- mittee of the British House of Commons re- garding the Montreal system of stowing grain cargoes, was considered at a special meeting of Council this day. It-dppears to the Coun- eil that it is absolutely impossible for the Port Warden te be absont at the present time, owing te the pressure of business, the Council having just been making arrangements to meet the increasing demand upon the office, It is a matter of much cencern that it seems im: possi- bla to couvur in what comes from you with all the force of a recommendation, but the Coun- c'] desire me to suggest that the object " ght be even better accemplished, perhaps, if yeur department would take evidence by co:ntaission and transmit te London, te be pressed upon the notice of the Parliamentary committee by Sir A, 'T. Shaw, the Deputy Port Warden, introduction he might consider necessary, and so promptly was the whole thing done that these letters were in the hands of Mr. Shaw on the morning of the 17th, and he left on the Polynesian the fellowing day. This statement of the facts as they exist is a snflicient answer to the statement in the Globe. Whether Mr. Pope is geing to England at all or not we are not aware ; but it will be seen at any rate that he lest ne time in securing the very best evidence that could be obtained to submit to the committee in Kngland. We understand that on the day the anneuncement was mate that the Board of Trade had agreed to send Mr. Shaw, the fact was telegraphed to the English press. Mr. Shaw has been several times before the committee of the House of Commons, and has undergone a most searching examination at the hands of several of the members. The regulations made for loading at this port have already received the warm approbation ef Mr. Plimsoll, and we have no doubt that the presence of Mr. Shaw before the committee will havé a most important effect upon the proposed legislation.

Str, —While en a recent trip from ‘tharlette- town to Boston on beard the steamer Wor. ecster, I had the plezsure of witnessing the working of the new Brunswick Berta, which is a new invention, and is represented by Mr. Dana Parks, of Boston. [also hada trial of the berth, and found it te be everything represented by Mr. Varks. 1t is, without doubt, one of the best berths yet invented, and is a great comfort to traveliers, parti- cularly those subject to sea sickness. Once in it, no matter how the ship rolls er pitches, her motion cannot be felt. 1t will, doubtless, be breught into use by the ecean steamers, when it cannot fail to give comfort and satis- faction.
