WONDERFUL ESCAPE OF PASSENGERS

HaALirax, July 11. The escape of the passengers and crew of the steamer Merrimack was one of the

|; most miraculous events ever known on this

coast. Little Hope Island is about 4 miles off the Point of Port Jolix. An exper- ienced navigator said to-day that ‘the Joss of the Merrimack is inexcusable if not criminal. Captain Crowell should not have been within two miles of that well- known dangerous spot with its doubly dangerous currents. If it was a foggy night Le sheuld kave been five miles pff. Near thaf Island are other dangerous ledges, known to all navigators. Outside was perfec? safety.”

Four passengers from the wreck arrived here to-nigiit, having driven through from Liverpool, travelling night and day. They tell an almost incredible story of demoral- ization among the officers and crew, and declare that it was a perfectly clear moon- light night, with not the slightest sig n of fog. The steamer was going twelve knots an hour, and crashed upon the rocks with tremendous force. The shock was some-

ting terrific, and literally ripped the bottom out of the vessel, so that she filled and sank immediately, but could not sink, having run right on the

breakers which surrounded the Island, a distance of about 150 yards. The ofticers and crew seemed paralyzed and a scene of confusion that was literally indiscribable took place.

Had the disaster taken place in rough weather or,the darkness of night, the pas- sengers who have arrived here declare that not a soul would have been saved. Added to the utter demoralization of the crew, was the fact that boats could not be launched. The first had to be cut away and let fall into the sea. While

more boats were being launched the ap tain got jammed between some of the wreckage and had his ribs broken. The

four passengers complained of being rob- bed. The light-house keeper says he saw the vessel some distance oif, making straight for the rocks, but could do nothing to save her. The women and other passen- gers are at Catherine’ssHarbor, mostly destitute, but are being made as comfort- able as possible under circumstances. They will be brought to Halifax in the steamer “Oity of St. John” to-morrow, and will be sent to Boston on the Worcester which sails to-morrow.

The captain af the Worcester which ar- rived to-day says he experienced thick weather from the time he left Boston until he reached Halifax.

Naval Officers’ Adventure.

Hauirax, N.S8., July 11.

Jenkinson and Stewart, naval cadets, and Taylor, midshipman of H. M. 8. Canada, hired a sloop yesterday and went sailing on Bedford Basin. They did not come back last evening, and at 4 o'clock this morning every boat and steam launch belonging to the British fleet were out looking for them. Late to-night they were found, on a small Island, where they had run the boat ashore and smashed her on the rocks and were unable to get off.

A Terrible Yachting Accident.

New York, July 11,

The sloop yacht Mystery left Rifle Bar, an island in Canarsie Bay, at 7 o'clock last eveniny, loaded almost to the gunwales with women and children, when off Barren Is- land, en route for Canarsie, the yacht cap- sized and only 13 of the 40 souls composing the passengers and crew are known to be rescued.
