KEARNEY’S PROMISE.

There was no time to run back to give the alarm at the cottage, and there was only a chance that his careless hand had left the window-sash unfastened.

Sne pushed wich all her might, and the casement-sash parted as she rushed in with a wild ery, and threw a great cloak she wore over the the flame that was sending ruddy tongues close to Carroll’s hair as he awaked and started out of his stupid sleep.. Rushing to the kitchen, she tound a pail of water close at hand, and so put out the flames.

Before Carroll had quite recovered his senses the child hed gone home breathless and worn out with her strange, swift work, and, little woman as she was wound up with a good ery. The sick woman did not waken, and #0 she stole into her mother’s room to tell her story, which seemed a dream, so quickly had it all happened.

It was New Year’s evo, and the little group in Jobn’s cottage welcomed Kearney’s handsome face as he came in their midst, to say.

‘Now what shall it be for this brave little woman? A silk dress, a purse of gold?’ ee

John cleared his throat, and said in his homely, awkward way,

‘Master Carroll, my little girl was the one God set to watch you, and may- be she saved you from harm. Now we don’t want to be paid for doing the Lord’s work, but when you promised Annie to give her what she would ask, the child thought out for herself what to say, and wrote it down, or got her teacher todo it for her. 1 hope you'll take it kindly, sir. Boy and man, I’ve given loving service, sir, and I and mine say over no daily prayer that leaves your name out.’

Carroll looked from one to the other, wondering at their solemn faces, and thrust the pen in the ink-bottle Annie held, before he opened the paper.

He started as he saw in the well- known hand-writing these simple worda.

‘{ promise, by God's help, from this day forward, to drink nothing that can intoxicate.’ It was dated duly, and it only remained for him to sign his name. There was a little pause, when each one held their breath as ho shut his eyes and knit his brows in earnest theught a moment, then dashed his bold signature at the foot of the simple document, and gave if to Annie, say- ing.

‘A Kearney keeps his word,’ and then added softly, ‘God helping.’

Through the open door Aunt Ellis had been watching all, and now a faint

ittle piping voice, quavered out,

‘Praise God from whom all blessings flow.’ and sang it softly to the end.

That was many years ago. In the

and old house on the hill, Carroll Kaus and his gentle wifo Lilly keep open house each New Year’s day, with lights and fires, and right good cheer, the mansion welcomes all. But all the light finds not a wine-cup with its ruby lure, the fire warms no unsteady, shak- ing hands, and the good cheer lacks the sabtle poison of the adder’s sting.

Annie has studied wel! through her girlish years, and in her turn is’ guid- ing three little Kearney through spell- ing-book and “jografy.” Aunt Ellis went to sleep before the bluebirds came back to their haunts, or the snowdrops rung their bells in the spring wind of the bright New Year, when a left-hand- ed man did a right-handed action, and signed Carroll Kearney’s name thereto. And John and his wife live peacefully on, in their own cottage now, or rath- er Annie’s, for that was her New Year's present when another year came around and he had won his bride. A pleasant, shady spot where the sun shone in the morning, and the grateful shadow came in the summer afternoon, and all the people knew it by the pleasant name of ‘Kearney’s Promise.’

Fiui Giur.—A_ good fluid glue, ready at all times for instant use, without any preliminary preparation, is one of the most useful articles of stock with which a workshop can be furnished. To make sucha glue, all ihatis necessary is to melt three pounds of glue in a quart of water, and then drop in gradually a small quantity of nitric acid. When this fingredieat is added, the mixture is to be taken from the fire and allowed to cool. Glue so prepared has been kept in an open bottle for two years, and still ready for use on the instant:
