Men's Soccer Look to Capture Back to Back Championships

With only a single loss on a remarkable season, the men's soccer panthers are on their way to the playoffs with an impressive record of 7-1-4. This gives the boys a bye through the first round of the playoffs and secures them a position in an AUS Semi-Final birth against the winner of Dalhousie (2nd in east) and UCCB (3rd in west) in their Quarter-Final game. In the other Semi- Final match up, SMU will be awaiting the winner of the other Quarter-Final game between UNB (2nd in west) and SFX (3rd in east).

If the two powerhouses of SMU and UPEI meet in the finals it

will be a difficult challenge for the panthers as they have rendered their only loss of the season to the Huskies 1-0. The Panthers, along with the Huskies, have each allowed only eight goals in their twelve games to date. Look for the AUS final to be a nail bit- ing, defensive thriller no matter who is fortunate enough to make it.

However, one should not look past their semi-final match against the high powered offence of DAL (W 1-0), who boast an AUS leading 28 goals for, and a respectable 7-3-2 record.

head meetings this year which saw UPEI steal four of the possible six points.

The AUS Championship game will be held in Halifax this Sunday at 2:00 p.m. as SMU earned the right to host the game by completing the regu- lar season in first place overall. Can our panthers become back to back AUS Champions or will St. Mary's capture their third title in four years? I guess you will have to make the trek to Halifax this weekend to see.

Panthers Victorious in Home Opener vs. SMU

Our men's hockey panthers came out victorious in their home opener for their first win of the season. The panthers defeated SMU 5-4 ina game that had fans literally on the edges of their seats. Jason Flick record- ed his first win of the season as he steered away 50 shots in an impressive display of goaltending. These shots weren't just tricklers from the blue line either, but stellar offensive chance for the Huskies to capitalize on. There

were numerous odd man rushes, and

shit loads of scrambles in front of Flicks crease that were constantly denied by the Ontario native.

The game began slowly with the majority of the plays as dump-ins and chases but when the St. Mary's captain scored a week goal at 13:57 of the first period, the panthers new they had to respond. Which they did only 18 seconds later when John Brioux capi- talized on the panthers ninth shot of the game, the equalizer was assisted by Dave Dalliday and Joel Ward. The first period ended well for the panthers as they outshot the Huskies 10-9.

The second period was much of the same as St. Mary's jumped ahead again early in the period with a redirected shot in front of the UPEI net minder. Then, like the first period, the panthers answered back with more fire- power as John Kozoriz scored a beauti- ful shorthanded marker and Joel Ward

scored helping the panthers find their first lead of the game at the 17:40 mark of the frame.

The third period was filled with offensive chance after offensive chance for both sides but it was the Panthers that scored two key goals and established a solid four man wall at their blue line to give them the victory. Although the Huskies pressed late in, the game and brought it within one goal with 30 seconds to go in the game, the poise of the panthers rose to the occasion.

Hockey Season Recap

After losing the first two game of the year to StFX 5-2, and SMU 6-4, the men's hockey team has rebounded nicely as they have claimed their revenge for the time being with victo- ries over those two clubs 1-0 and 5-4 respectively. The guys now sit at an even five hundred record of 2-2-0-0 and look to inch their way up the divi- sion.

They will travel to Dalhousie and then Acadia on the Ist and 2nd of the month and then back to the Charlottetown Civic Centre for their second home game of the year against the Axemen of Acadia. Game time is 7:00 pm.

Four games into the season already the race for AUS supremacy is a tight one as all teams in the league have recorded at least one loss, leaving the panthers only two points out of first place. 5;

Recently eight young men from UPEI (without a coach) tried their hand in a varsity volleyball tournament in Truro this past weekend. The team was composed of ex-high school play- ers who wanted to see how they matched up against some of the Atlantic regions best men's volleyball teams.
