Weppine Present.—A very handsome Bible, appropriately inscribed, was presented Mr. John A. Longworth, Prothonotary of the Supreme Court, on Christmas Eve. The presentation was made by His Honor Mr. Justice Young, on behalf of the judges and barristers of the Island, and the occasion thereof was the marriage of Mr. Longworth some time since, It is, perhaps, needless to add that the gift is highly appreciated by Mr. and Mrs. Longworth.

Musicat.—Mr. Earle has been engaged by the Y. M. C. A. to give two grand concerts dnring the season—the first a secular concert early in January, the other a grand oratorio concert to be given in March. The success attending the series of concerts given by Mr. Earle three years ago, is a guarantee of the superiority of the music to be performed at these concerts. The choruses will cosist of upwards of thirty picked voices, and the in- stramental music promises to be of unusual

excellence. —

Deserters from therebel force report that there are many wounded Arabs in Hand- oub. Osman Digna, they say, is sending the women to Eryweit preparatory to re- treating to the Nile. Friendly Sheiks strongly urge the British authorities to ad- vance upon Handoub. The Chief of the Gamitabas offers to lead a force of 10,000 warriors in co-operation with the British, and he promises that Osman Digna if once expelled will not be allowed to return.

J. Cunningham Stewart, Comptroller of Postal Finances, died of typhoid fever this evening.

It is rumored that Mr. Egan, who for some time has been a divisional manager of the C. P. R., will be appointed General Manager, vice VanHorn, who is now Presi- dent of the company.

Mayor McLeod Stewart, whose election in January last was contested, has just been notified that he is unseated. His term would expire on Monday next.

Advance sheets of the trade returns for the last fiscal year show the aggregate trade of Canada to have been $201,000,000, of which $99,000,000 were exports. The im- ports for home consumption aggregate $102,000,000, and the duties cullected $22, - 200,000.

The Fisheries Department has been ap- prised of the return to Victoria of two British Columbia fishing schooners, which have been on an exploring tour of the black cod banks off Queen Charlotte Islands. The owners of the vessels have been richly rewarded for their enterprise. Fish were found in great abundance in 150 to 300 fathoms and about three miles from shore.

Halifax Notes. Hauirax, Dec. 26.

Peter Bennett, ex-Sheriff of Annapolis County, is dead, aged 84 years. He was Sheriff 35 years. The man arrested at Baddeck as Thomp son, the Braintree murderer, has been re- leased. He was not the man.

Captain Jackman, of the Newfoundland sealing steamer Eagle, will get himself in- to serious trouble the next time he enters a Canadian port. A North Sydney des- patch says: ‘* The Eagle was suspected of smuggling liquors ashore. Liquor was found and seized and a Customs officer was placed on board the vessel, but the captain forced him ashore and proceeded to St. John’s, Nfld., without clearing from the Customs House.”’

Medical Students at Mt. Allison. SacKVILLeE, N. B., Dec. 26.

The general council of medical education and registration of the United Kingdom, at a meeting held on Nov. 26, passed the fol- lowing resolution :—‘‘That the examina- tion for a degree in arts of the University of Mount Allison College, New Brunswick, be recognized and added to the list of prelim- inary examinations accepted by the coun- cil.

Mount Allison graduates will thus be ad- mitted, in the future, to all medical schools in the United Kingdom, without passing any preliminary examination.

Grain Elevators at Quebec. QueBeEc, Dec. 26.

The Harbor Commissioners have under discussion a scheme for the erection of grain elevators here, and are getting up 4 deputation to interview the Minister of Public Works on the subject.

It is stated that the Federal Govern- ment intend giving a subsidy of $50,000 yearly for three years to a company re-

gulf seal fisheries.

A well-to-do inhabitant of that town fell into a trance, and was officially certified to be dead. Preparations were made for the funeral, when, on the night before that mournful event was to take place, the supposed dead man “‘ sat up in his coffin and called fora drink. The per- son who was watching by the side of the re- puted corpse, was alarmed and ran away, so the rather substantial ghost got out of his coffin, imbibed the contents of a bottle of wine, which was on the table, divested himself of his grave clothes, donned his own, and thenawakened the members of his family. Next day, amid great revelry and rejoicing, he went to the Mayor's office and reported himself alive and kicking.”

South Australia is becoming a wine pro- ducing country.

‘Dear wife,” said a dying husband, ‘‘If you do marry again, wait at least gutil the grass is growing on my grave.” The widow promised taithfully that his wish should be respected. About two weeks after the funeral the widow visited the grave, and pressing a gold coin in the sexton’s hand said: **Can’t you have this grave sodded without delay.

A Conviction Quashed. Toronto, Dec. 27.

The Police Magistrate recently convicted a faith cure doctor for practising in this city, but his conviction has been quashed by the Court of Common Pleas, who held that healing, or professing to heal, by Christian science, is not an offence agains? the Medical Act.
