The band was very profes- onal, and put on a great show. The mosphere was extremely light- parted, and both the band and the owd were in good spirits. After an cellent set, the band retired for e evening and the action moved to "The Wave" as some students ot their first taste of what the enue could offer, complete with ocktails". It was an entertaining ay to end a long day.

Tuesday was "Shinerama" day. The NSO crew all gathered in the streets of Charlottetown, doing almost anything they could that might earn them some money toward the cause of raising money for cystic fibrosis research. It was a fantastic cause, and a good time was had while doing it. At last count, the amount raised was about $6400! After the fund raiser was completed, it was back to UPEI for the murder mystery. Although the ending ended a bit off, the result

The Wacky Olympics were the big event of Tuesday evening, and they brought the competition between the groups to a head. After a ceremonial start, the games began. The interaction between opposing teams was great, and the message was Clear - " It doesn't matter who wins or loses, it's all about having fun". After a few hours of moving from station to sta- tion, the winning team was finally announced to be the Mighty Ducks. The whole event was hosted by Glow Promotions, a company based in Halifax and Moncton. Having run "Wacky Olympics" for almost two years at various events, they knew what they were doing and how to pull it off. The extra money put into the NSO week seemed to be well worth it.

Wednesday was the first day of classes for the new students, but the evening offered the final two events of the week. The first was the movie premier, in which all the tapes that had been recorded by each team throughout the week were shown in the Duffy Amphitheater. Following the films, it was finally time to give out the NSO awards, complete with golden panther trophies. The male spirit

award went to Lloyd of the Silver Bullets, and the female spirit award went to Lauren Smith of the Yellow Submarines. Brodie MacPhee was awarded a participation award, and was recognized for the excellent and creative sketches he made of many of the NSO events.

The award for outstanding spirit in a female leader went to Abby Butler, and the male leader spirit award went to Ryan MacDermott. Both Josh Simon and Jeff Clow were recognized for all their help organizing the whole week. Kerri Shea was awarded a prize for her second place finish in Sunday's game show, and Colin was awarded a prize for the huge amount of spirit he displayed dur- ing the Amazing Race. In the end it was team Sandstorm that took the big prize (Sandstorm .. . ! Sandstorm ...! Sandstorm... !).

All in all, the week went extremely well. It was obvious that the new students were getting along terrifically, and there was a tremen- dous amount of spirit demonstrated by all. NSO 2003 has raised the bar for the future, and it will be diffi- cult to produce something to top it. Kudos to all involved, and if the first week was any indication, the 2003-2004 academic year should be a good one for school spirit.

Book Review: Life of Pi: A Novel Author: Yann Martel Review by: Rebecca Shorten

This book is not a newcom- er on the market, being published in 2001. I have put off reading it,

until I found a copy in the used bookstore. I don't know why I waited., this book is great. It is about a boy, Piscine Molitor Patel, who's father is a zookeeper. The family decides to move from India to Canada, taking some of the zoo's

animals with them to sell to North American zoos. The boy however gets shipwrecked and is lost at sea in a lifeboat alone, except for one companion: a Bengal tiger. "Life of Pi" is a story about courage, faith, and trust. This story will make you

believe in things you never thought possible, and make you question what truth really is. If you haven't already read this book, you should. It is great and you won't be able to put it down.
