An Entirely New Idea From Sweden Uti- lizing an Eleetrie Light.

The latest advance in the transmis- sion of pictures by wire is the tele-pho- t.graph, a new Swedish invention, based upon the remark=sdle variability of the electric registanc> of selenium under light of varying intensity, The transmitter is a fine selenium point, which is carried by mechanism moving it repeatedly forward and backward in a traveling spiral of very close windings. The receiver is a very sus- ceptible incandescent lamp, arranged to move in exactly the same way as the selenium point. The dispatching apparatus resembles a photographic camera, with its lens so placed that the image to be transmitted is thrown upon the plane in which the selenium point moves. An electric current pass- ing through the selenium point varies with the light shadows through which the point passes, and produces in the incandescent Jamp at the other end corresponding variations, which trace out a picture identical with that at the dispatching station There are various ways—sueh as photography and viewing direct through some mag- nifier—of making a picture visible. The speed of the selenium point is adjusted to that of the eye for rectiving impres- sions, a continuous image of any part ef the picture being given, when the point passes completely over it in about the eighth of a second,

A New Fabrice.

A new fabric or material has been just introduced in England, x = known as “gelsoline,”’ and Is prepared direct from the fibre of the bark of the mulberry tree, without the inter- vention of the silkworm. The bark cf the mulberry tree is peculiar, from the fact that there are three absolutely distinct fibres procurable from cr pe- culiar to it. Thus, in addition to the ordinary silk, a strong, thick fibre for certain purposes is obtained by killing the silkworm and drawing the thread

A cross-country electric railroad has just been completed between Carthage and Carterville in Missouri. The dis- tance is 15 miles. Carthage and Car- terville are in the centre of the rich lead and zinc producing Section of Missouri, and a great deal of mining machinery is scattered along the line ef the road. New Suggestione—Kubbing Reeommended in Some Casen.

In the large cities, says Womankind, middle-aged women throng the gymna- sium and physical culture schools to learn how to reduce the too abundant flesh and keep off the rheumatism which is often an acocmpaniment, The woman who does her own housework has most of her muscles called into exercise every day, 4nd the danger with her is that they are overexer- cised; still much relief can be received by sponging every night after hard la- ber with the following inexpensive lo- tion: Two ounces of spirits of am- monia, two ounces of spirits of cam- phor, one and one-half cups of s:a Salt, one cup of alcohol, and one quart of rain water,

The woman whore face and threat are thin can remedy the thinness by frequent bathing in cool water, and before retiring rubbing in some good cream. In rubbing the wrinkles should be rubbed against, so as to rub them out, and it is as much in the rubbing as in the cream. A nice bit of soft white flannel rubbed several times daily over the face will be beneficial, and she whose double chin detracts from her good looks can, by judiciously rub- bing downward, get rid of th: super- fluity,. Housework, sweeping, dusting, bed- making, washing and the incessant pro. cesses necessary to keep things bright about a house are excellent for the complexten. They also keep the spir- its good and make the worker grace- ful, strong and agile.

Anything that is healthful ts beau- tifying. A diet of rare broiled beef, beets, asparagus, carrots, onions, juicy fruits, dried toast, soft boiled eggs and milk will do more toward beautifying @ woman than all the lotions and po- mades ever invented.

If the skin is kept clean and fresh and the diet is well regulate and laxative, the complexion will take care of itself. All the skin ointments in existence will not do as much towaré beautifying the face as will a sufi- cient amount of fruit, such as grapes, berries, oranges and peaches.

Mud-colored skins are either pro- duced by torpid liver or else by a not sufficiently nourishing diet.

One Of the best remedies for moth patches is the extract of dandelion, One large pill of this taraxicum, as it is called, should be taken four times a week at night and the djgt well regu- lated. An ointment got ng and whitening should also applied.

Gymnastics are the best and cheapest method of acquiring a pretty neck. Cocoa butter well rubbed in is also ex- cellent, but rather expens ve. Sing- ing exercises also are improving to the throat and make it round and pretty. But gymnastics are less expensive and surer in result than any other method.

If one can’t indulge in a masseuse @ flesh brush of rubber is the next best thing to use. A thorough rubbing twice a day exercises the flesh and stimulates the nerves, doing away with the tired muscies amd making the lazy ones work,
