The Daily Chronicle to-day devotes the first leader to Sir John, and speaks highly of his services to the empire. It thinks that Sir John Macdonald's programme will sufficeto keep the present parliament at Ottawa active for some years, and says that the choice of leader lies between Sir Charles Tupper and Sir John Thompson.
Sir Charles Tupper is still in Vienna, and gives no sign of an early return.
DOMINION PARLIAMENT. WASHINGTON NEGOTIATIONS
Orrawa, June 4.
Papers of negotiations between Usnada and the United States in reference to the Washington negotiations were talked of in the House yesterday. They include all papers relating to the invitation and visit to Washington of the Canadian delegates. Macdonald, the new member for Algoma, has taken his seat.
The prohibition debate has been indefin- itely pustponed, owing to Sir John’s critical state.
Private members during the day session were chiefly occupied with the subject of copyright.
Hon. Mr. Foster said that should ne un- fortunate occurrence take place, the budget speech will be delivered on Friday.
THE STATE OF IRELAND, What Balfour Says.
Lonpoy, June 4.
In a speech yesterday Balfour said that the conditions now prevailing in Ireland show the benefits which have accrued to that country through the enforcement of the Crimes Act. It had eo well fulfilled expectations that crime had ceased 80 largely that it is justifiable to suspend operations of the Act everywhere in Ireland, except ins few places where the ashes of the campaign still smouldered, and proclamations to that effect_would soon be issued. Balfour said Ireland urgently needed imperial laws and imperial credite.

_ Got Tarer Monrus,—On Tuesday even- ing last two men—James Mclsaac and A. G. Brackett—slept in the one bed at Thorp’s boarding house on Great George Street. Next morning when Brackett arose, he missed two sovereigns from his ,clothes. He suspected that his bed-fr llow, | who had arisen earlier than he, had stolen the money, and called in the services of Police Sergeant Bradley, who soon suc: ceeded in arresting McIsaac, from whom he recovered one sovereign, $4 in paper monty and 76 cents in silver. The two sovereigns lost by Brackett, one of which was an Aur- tralian coin, he valued at $9. In court this merning, McIsaac denied that he had 'stolen the money, but said he picked up two Sovereigns on the bedroom floor yesterday saan ht The marshal swore that after his arrest MclIsaac admitted taking the money from Frackett. Brackett, Sergeant Badly, and a lad named Doyle, gave evidence which His Honor thought established the guilt of the prisoner, and sentenced him to three months imprisonment with hard labor.
