A Sensible Wife.

There lived not very far from here A farmer and his wife,

A comfortable, happy pair, With but one cause for strife.

The farmer was a jolly soul Who dearly loved a drop,

But, as he shamefully confessed, He **Knew not when to stop.”

And yet he would not sign the pledge His anxious wife to please;

It would kill him all at once to stop— He'd *‘do it by degrees.”

‘You'll get drunk once too often, Sam, And, mark my words! some night You'll fall iato the garden well, And serve you exactly right.”

Sam laaghed, but ere two days had passed The warning words came trne;

He tumbled headlong down the well, That bruised him black and blue.

Into the bucket clambered he, Then yelled with a!l his might, : For, drenched and shivering, he'd no mind To sit there all the night.

The good wife heard his cries for help, She knew well where to go;

And, leaning o’er the edge, she cried : **Didn’t I tell you so?”

**Don’t stop to preach,” said master Sam, **But wind me to the top;

I was not drank when I fell in— I only had a drop.

‘‘Always the same old tale,” thought Jane, Then bravely set to work,

And half-way wound the bucket up When back it slipped with a jerk.

Twice this happened, then poor Sam Suspected its trick;

“Wife, wife,” he cried, “‘Whatdo you mean, I'll drown if you're not quick.”

**Have patience, love,” said Mrs. Jane, **I'm sure you're hard to please.

Like you, harsh measures 1 despise— Your rising by degrees.”

The shivering wretch was sober now, And cried : “If to the edge

You brivg me safely, this time, Jane, I vow I'll sign the pledge.”

With might and main she tugged and pulled, And wound him to the brink;

Sie there and then produced a card That made him swear off drink.

And Sam has kept the pledge, and now Feels happy and secure.

He often tells his wife, ‘‘Mine waa A genuine water cure !”

Tuesday and Friday—Leave West River Bridge for Charlottetown at 7 a m, calling at Westville and Rocky Point, leaving Westville at 730 aod Rocky Point at 830. Leave Charlottetown tor Rocky Point at 9 30, also 2 pm; returning, leave Rocky Point at 10 a mand22) pm. Leave Charlottetown at 4 p m for new Bridge, calling at Rocky Point and Westville.

Weduesday—Leave Charlottetown at 9 30 am for Rocky Point; returving, leave Rocky Point at 10am. Also leave Charlottetown at 3 p m for Rocky Point, returning at 3 20 pm.
