You can readily understand that a surgeon performing an operation prefers to have the patient asleep under an anaesthetic than to have him wide awake wondering about what the surgeon is doing, what the discussion between the surgeon and assistant may mean, the possibility of the patient becoming frightened because lie is held or fastened to the operating table, and other conditions that may arise during the operation. One of the commonest conditions requiring operation is hernia or rupture. The use of a truss prevents serious accidents, but sometimes the hernia cannot be held by a truss, or the truss is so uncomfortable that the patients general health and even mental health is threatened. Operation is then advised.
