RESIGNATION OF PrinctpaL Harper.— Mr. John Harper has resigned his position as Principal of the Victoria School in this city. Charlottetown, P. E. Island, has offered him a higher salary than St. John, and he has accepted the position. This is a fine position and we trust the Board of School Trustees will exercise their best judg- ment in filling it.——St. John Tel.

Av a recent meeting of the Marine Board in this city, Capt. P. A. Scott, R. N., Chairman, W. A. Beattie, of Pictou; HW. N. Silver, of Charlottetown; Dunean Me- Dougall, of Beifast; and Timothy Buckley, of this city, passed very creditable examin- ations, and received Masters’ certificates. ‘They were the only men before the Board, and were prepared at the Commercial Col- lege.

Tur Grand Lodge of the I. O. O. F., will meet at Pictou, N. §8., to-morrow. The Grand Lodge will be escorted to the Hall at 10 o'clock, a. m., after which a picnic will be held. After the day’s festivities, the Grand Lodge will assemble for the transaction of business, and remain in ses- sion until Thursday evening. We will re- ceive, by telegraph, the names of the new officers which we will publish immediately after their election. The following are the Delegates from this Province :—

A rare case of larceny was partly tried at the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court to-day. It was directed by a domestic named Mary McLeod against a young carpenter named Samuel McDonald for the larceny of a gold ‘‘keeper” ring. ‘The developments of the case show that while Mary was engaged at washing some clothing before the door of Mr. Frederick McLeod, Samuel came forth and in a good-natured kind of a way at- tempted to wrestle the ring from Mary’s finger. She strongly resisted and em- phatically protested against him taking the ring; but he persisted, and, gaining pos- session of the valuable, quietly placed it on his finger and marched off, saying ‘‘You’ll lend me this for a few days. ‘‘A few days” elapsed, but Samuel did not restore the ring. She demanded it of him several times, and at length was grieved to discover that he had bestowed it upon another, named Louise. She still continued her demands, but the ring was not forthcoming and she determined to settle the matter in court. During the trial to-day the prisoner and prosecutor were interrogated regarding the present whereabouts of the ring. Neither could tell. At this juncture there was a commotion among the oflicers. Presently a tall policeman ascended the Magistrate’s desk and, pulling fhe ring off his finger, confessed that he had got it from Louise and he thought it to be the ring in question. He had been wearing it for some time, not knowing who was its rightful owner. Miss McLeod then came forward and identified the ring as hers. McDonald had a_ poor excuse for his actions. The Magistrate in- formed him that he would remand him, as there was a witness in the matter whom he wished to examine, and that after hearing that evidence, he would either convict him for lareeny or an assault.

Additional interést has been manifested to- day during the trial of the Osbornes by the production of twowitnesses who were not heard before, ‘There is also a rumor. that the mys- terious individual who had the drink at the Waverley House at midnight ou October 12th, as described by Annie Parker, is here and will be soon examined. Nearly all the witnesses for the Crown have now been examined. Mr. Palmer is said to have a larve number of wit nesses for the defence.

Mrs. Sarah Ann Stultz, of Moneton, was the | first witness sworn to-day. She testitied that

her statement when Harry and Eliza did, and

she would have told the truth as they did, but

a foolish French girl’s story would be no use.

fore six months. If the guilty parties were found out it would be those they little ex-

pected. She also said there was no one in the house at the time but Campbell, the dentist.

Wilson had gone out of the room about the time McCarthy did. She (Mrs. Osborne) said she had come to Moncton to arrest Parker, and her swearing would do no good when she was in the Penitentiary. She was going to Judge Botsford for advice. Another time Mrs. Os- borne and Eliza were there and talking about the affair. Mrs. Osborne said if they were found guilty they could not hang them till they found the body, which never could be. Witness asked her how she knew. She said Botsford told her. After that Mrs. Osborne was there and found fault with Mrs. McCarthy for searching for Tim and going through her house talking to her hired girl, etc., and she wished she would mind her business. Eliza being there one time they were talking of the body seen by a boy in the Scadoue River, she said it was a dead sheep. She spoke about Annie Parker and said she felt as though she could tear her d—d heart out. Witness asked her one time about the tree men, and Eliza said she almost believed they were there on the 12th. They kept no register and were not supposed to know. Witness smelt liquor about Mrs. Osborne on one occasion.

Amelia Ann Stultz, daughter of the previous witness, was present on three different occa- sions when the conversation took place. Be ing sworn she detailed the conversation as near as she could, corroborating her mother’s testi mony. She testified clearly and with con- tidence.

Edward McCarthy, of Moncton, brother of the deceased, was the next witness sworn. He saw Tim onthe 10th and missed him on the 20th October. He made inquiries at the Waverly, and talked to John Osborne about his brother and asked Eliza about him. Eliza said he was there on the night of the 12th, and / that Smith was with him. She didn’t see him. He came there intoxicated and wanted liquor. She would not give it to him and he got mad and produced a flask. She could not tell what McCarthy said last, as she went ont in the kitchen and left him. Eliza appeared delicate about talking to witness about McCarthy. Witness then detailed his going to Shediac the day of arrest and his visit to the Scadoue, searching for the body, and his view of the body when found.

After Mr. McCarthy left the stand, Frank

Smith, formerly soap and tallow chandler, Shediac, was sworn. He testified to getting a hatchet like the one in Court from the Os- bornes for Philip Caldwell.

In the cross-examination, he said that he had seen rows at the Waverly House, and blood spilt and scattered about. He never

heard Mrs. Osborne nor Eliza swear. He had heard Harry swear a little, easy. He had

never seen them intoxicated.

Jude Herbert, Cape Bald, sworn: He worked at the Waverley last fall till the Sth of October. Saw a hatchet two weeks before he left, and the next week he could not find it. He saw it only in the kitchen. He talked with them a little about Mr. Mce- Carthy.

Cross-examined—He swears positively that the bar-room door was not fastened (Annie Parker says it was); he thinks the blade of the hatchet in Court shorter than the one he saw. He cut a horse tie from the bed cord, but thinks it softer than this (Osborne’s bed cord shown).

The opening of the new winning at ‘‘ THE SYDNEY MINES” and the fact that the SYDNEY COAL now being shipped is all from the DEEP taken in conaection with re cent improvements in the provess of screening, affords purchasers a positive guarantee of the very superior quality and condition of the SYDNEY COAL now offered for sale.

It is a well-know fact that for many years past the prices of other Cape Breton coals have been regulated by the rates fixed for SYDNEY COAL; but while itis true that other coals, to get a sale at all, have been pressed on the market at various prices under the current rate of SYDNEY COAL, it is no less true that, taking into account the superior lasti qualities of SYDNEY COAL when com with other Cape Breton coals, the advantage, both as to economy and convenience, is in favor of SYDNEY COAL, even at a much higher price.

The General Mining Association (Limited) regret that they should again have to caution the Public against the attempts being made from time to time to induce them to uy in- ferior coals purporting to be ‘‘ EQUAL TO SYDNEY,” “SUPERIOR TO SYDNEY,” etc., etc., while some yet more unscrupulous vendors have not hesitated to advertise their coal as SYDNEY COAL (from some designated locality). All these efforts to sell coal by such means are only so many admissions on the part of those who make them of the stanDARD character of SYDNEY COAL.

It has come to the knowledge of the Asso- ciation that in frequent instances parties givi orders to truckmen and others for SYDNEY COAL have been furnished with other and inferior coal. The Public are cautioned against permitting themselves to be imposed upon in this way.

Every vessel loaded at THE SYDNEY MINES is furnished with a certificate of her cargo being Sydney Coal. Parties purchasi should satisfy themselves by demanding the production of this certificate.

The ‘‘ Sydney Coal” is registered under the laws of the Dominion, and unauthorized i using the Trade Mark “SYDNEY COAL” are hable to prosecution.
