Stole to Buy Food for His Wife

Hatirax, Nov. 1.—Thomas Nixon was sentenced to fifteen days in Rockhe ad to- day on acharze of stealing a dress from Mra. Johnston. Nixon’s wife is only six- teen years old. The wife stated that she vaw her husband with the stolen dress in his posses-ion. He gave it to her, ‘ut thinking it had been stolen, she ordered him to return it. He took it from the house and offered it for sale. The court made the rentence light because it believed that the dress had been stolen to buy food for the wife.

Death Under Peculiar Circumstances

Suetecrxe, Maas., Nov. 1.—Solomon Fi-ke, aged 60, died a day or two ago under peculiar circumsfances. He was driving with his daughter Hattie, when his spirited colt ran, throwing the old ‘yentleman out. The daughter grasped the reine, and as the horxe went down the mountain at breakneck apeed, courageout- ly guided him into an open field. There she was ares out and the wagon demol- ished. Meantime Mr. Fiske had gathered him-elf up, ran down the mountain road, and when he reached his daughter and saw that she was not injured he dropped dead. The excitement and joy at the safety of his daughter caused his death.

The Missionaries Must Withdraw,

Loxvox, Nov. 1.—A Constantinople dee- patch says that advices from Moosh are to the effect that Armenian and Turkish not- ables bave been conferring as to the best means to prevent an outbreak. The Turks stipulated that Armenian missionaries dis- tributing relief in Sassoun should with- draw in three days, otherwise, they said, the Bitlis affair likely to be re-evacted. In view of the critical situation, Hon. A. W. Terrell. American minister, advised the missionaries to comply at present with the demand for withdrawal. Hon. M. H. [ierbert, British charge d’affaires, and Mr. Terrell made identical demands on the Porte to protect the missionaries. Mr. Terrell added that the United States sould ho'd Turkey anawerable for the lives of the missionaries. The Porte decided to send troops to protect them. Kurds threaten to plunder Armenians as s00n as the missionaries are gone.

Verdict in the Durant Case

Saw Francisco, Nov. 1,—The jury i the Durant case were out but twenty nin— utes and returned a verdict without any recommendation for mercy. The punish- ment was fixed atdeath. . This trial was fer the murder of Blanche Lamont on July 22nd last. Durant is yet to be tried for the murder of Minnie Williams. When the jury returned with the verdict the scene in the court room baffles description, Men cheered the decision, while women wept hysterically. Durant made a half attempt to rise to his feet, but before be was able to do so his mother, with half a sigh, half a moan, threw her arms around his nec and sank into her chair. Durant seeming- ly forgot his keen position for the time being and with his arms around his mother’s neck was doing his best to console her. When she left the room he was taken back tohis cell, apparently the most unconcerned in the vast assemblage,
