read reports that cigarette. smoking is hazardous to health but only six of them believe it.

Health Minister Jud¥ LaMarsh said Monday in a statement that these_statisics were reported in a sampling of opinion last win-

Her statement. said the survey was conducted across the coun- try. It found that 91.1 per cent of -males—and 88.2 per cent of females 15 years of age and over had heard or read reports about harmful effects of ciga- rette smoking.

Of the sample surveyed, 57.8 of the men and 61.6 of the women said they believéd ciga- rette smoking is a health haz: ard, and 40 per cent of the men and -33.4 per cent of the women doubted or did not believe that smoking ‘is a hazard.

The survey found that_ nearly eight out of 10 university grad- uates believed cigarette smok- ing hazardous to health, while less than half of those who had only some public school educa- tion without graduating believed it.

Over 60 per cent of residenis in Ontario and the western prov- inces were convinced of the health hazard, but less than half of the residents of Quebec believed it. | “Obviously,” Miss -LaMarsh | said,’ ‘‘the continuing task is the educational program which we share with the provinces and i various professional and vol- ultary organizations.

‘“‘We not only must convince those who still downgrade the hazard, but assist those who, recognizing it, have yet to meet -it with preventive action. This new study should assist and stimulate all who are contribut- ing to the Canadian smoking
